My Fail + Questions About PS3 As Source

Thread Starter

I've been using my DT990+Valhalla combo for about a week, and loving every minute of it.

Now my source is an onbaord X-Fi (Not really an X-Fi chip, but rather software enhanced Realtek apparently?)

But after purchasing my new setup my budget had no room for a new source at the moment.

I already expected the sound to be on the brighter sound, but nothing I can really complain about.

Enough background information, time for a story (and a facepalm)

Dug around my closet today and found my component cables for my PS3.

Thought I'd give it a whirl with my Valhalla + DT990.

Dear god, I can't even begin to compare sound between my onboard vs. the PS3

I expected onboard to perform under par, but not to this extent.

For over a week I've been thinking that this was the best I could afford at the moment, but I was clearly wrong.

Insert facepalm here. smily_headphones1.gif

What a difference a little exploring into your closet can do hahaha

And of course I started wondering, is a PS3 considered a decent source? (I do realize that it's more a media player than a DAC)

What do you guys think? I'm a beginner in HiFi so I don't really have a solid reference point, so I thought I'd ask around.

What would I expect with a true dedicated source?

Yah I wouldnt mind know the answer too as I have also been using my PS3 as a source and thinking would adding a DAC make a big difference.
