Help me choose portable headphones...

Folks!!

Need your help here...

I am new to this forum and am trying to get help so I can buy the right headphones for me - I am going to buy a pair of IEs and also a pair of closed cans...

Being a musician and audiophile, I care greatly about sound quality. Mostly - balanced, detailed sound. Wide sound-stage. Clear and involved sound. Instrumental spacing is important.

I hate pumped up bass for the sake of it - but love it when the music requires it.

So - for IE's - it's a toss up between the Shure SE 425s or the Shure SE 535s.

I read that the SHURE SE 535's offer rich bass and that scared me a little. I really don't want think bass - but I expect I am wrong about that...the triple drivers ought to be better. But please inform me about how they both sound in comparison.

I haven't heard either of these at all...

So - for closed cans...I was going to buy the B & W P5s because I have actually heard them and loved the sound. Very balanced, clear, and vibrant sound. No distortion at all. Gorgeous actually! But they weren't breath-taking.

However, I read amazing reviews of the Shure SRH 840 - professional monitor phones...and these were described as having wide sound-stage ( which the P5s don't have too much) and great instrumental spacing. They were also described as great at all ends of the spectrum - bass, mids and trebles...

What is truly going to knock my socks off with the RS-71A portable headphone amp that I am buying from Ray Samuels...

Can anyone with experience of any of these products help me to compare them before I put down the cash...

I should also give you my listening details -

Lots of classical music, all kinds of jazz, fusion, funk, R & B, pop, rock etc... very eclectic.

EQ: ipod classic 3G

Portable headphone amp: RS- 71A - with custom built LOD connector

Cans??? You tell me...

Thanks mate - I heard these and enjoyed trying them out. Super sound from those! However, I went and heard the SHR 840 and they blew my mind. Totally amazing sound! Loved them.

Still not sure about the IE's though...

yeah, shr840 are indeed beautiful inside and outside but i choose the hd25 because of the portability.

You're right on that point. The SHR 840's aren't the best for portability...
