I need advise and help on recabling ear piece headphones

I bet you get these questions on here all the time but i searched and couldnt find anything that could help me.

My experience, I have never recabled headphones or speakers. Iv only extended cables and resoder 1/4in connectors.

I have MX-460 http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...-460-earphonesthe cable works fine I just don't like the length, quality and look to it. I wanna replace the wire and the plug even tho its much easyer to just shorten it.

The real question im asking is what supplies do i need?
I know i need a new sodering iron but i dont know what to get. I need one that can do this job and other misc jobs like sodering boards.

I need wire and sleeve.  I dont know where to buy any of this online so links would be very nice.

and a new 3.5mm plug. Ill spend la few extra bucks for good connector that works and looks good.

If im gonna recable one might as well do another pair i have lol The wire is the same thing just bigger gage. I dont know what gages they are but ones a typical earpeice and the other is overhead medium small sized headphones.

Thanks Ziox

*Note* The first pic are my MX-460 and the seconed are my Sony MDR-V 150  (i know the Sonys are cheap but i use them for school and LANs) 1026001618.jpg1026001610.jpg

I think it's about as simple as you imagine, the links section has a bunch of parts suppliers:

I've also heard good things about:

http://redco.com/

http://www.pchcables.com/

http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp

http://www.meritline.com/

Disclaimer:I have no affiliation with any of these companies, nor have I ever used any of their products, so I can't vouch for any of them beyond hearsay.

Thank you those links help a ton.  How many feet of cable and sleeving should i buy? I am doing 2 headphones. 12ft? with standard length of 3ft or something like that?

I'd say that the cable length is totally up to you since you're customizing this for yourself.

I'd personally go with about 6ft (which is probably a little on the long side) per pair since you can always wrap it up (!!!) or cut it down, but you'd have a harder time lengthening a cable without a mess of adapters and extension cords. Besides, cable is (relatively) cheap per foot, but making another order for longer cable might not be worth it because of shipping and whatnot.

Do make sure that you have cable enough for both L and R if you're getting a three cable strand, you'll need the 2 cable strands and heatshrink to branch off the junction. A four cable strand might be a little easier, with some paracord housing and heatshrink to finish the look.

this thread might help explain a little better:

Good luck!

I'm pretty much a beginner myself, I just do a lot of reading while I poke around things (though on this topic, I've kludged together a few headphones before), so take my advice with a gain of salt (well, maybe except this bit...lol)

But let me know if I can be of any help and how things work out!

I have everything i need except one thing. I noticed people using Milspec Black Paracord Sheathing. Where can you get this stuff? I cant seem to find it anywhere.

This should be more than you'd ever need:

http://www.amazon.com/Paracord-Nylon-Cord-Rope-100ft/dp/B000S5ODNC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1288280883&sr=1-1-catcorr

(just the first result for paracord on amazon)

As it's not really an electronics good, but more government or millitary use related, you could see if you have any army buddies or a surplus goods store nearby that have a few feet of it lying around, that'd probably be your best/cheapest bet. 550 cord (named for the load it can support if I recall correctly) itself has a major following that I think just spilled over into other areas. For audio sheathing use, I don't think that it's vital that you get the "REAL stuff" fake knockoff may have a coarser weave and be rated for less tension, but you shouldn't be putting that much load on anyhow.

Alternatively, any cord with a braided housing should do the same job and might be cheaper at a hardware store or something around town if you factor in shipping. (*the link I gave you has 50 ft black for $5.88 with free ship, so you'll have ...extra. Then again, you might get a fetish for it like some others, and it's a pretty good cord to have around anyhow)

Think things like shoelaces and curtain pull cords... so long as it has a removable core and you can fit your new cords in, you shouldn't have a problem

Whats a good size gage of wire for headphones?  Im looking at this 24AWG  http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=504 or  26AWG   http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=505   Im using 3/16 braided nylon sleeving.

Thanks

nvm   After researching a bit I think the 24AWG will suit my needs better.
