Stereo set up under 300 to listen to through headphones?

Hi guys,

I love listening to music through headphones. I have three pairs of headphones...

1. Beyerdynamic 990 250 ohms

2. Audio Technica athm50

3. Sony 7506

What I want is to listen to my music and have good audio quality while I sit in my recliner.

Right now all I have is my ipod. But my headphones need more power to sound right.

I want a dedicated stereo/ components and not a computer or labtop.

Thanks...

For $300, I'd look hard at a used receiver.  There are a lot of excellent ones out there at fair prices these days.  You'll find them on Craigslist, garage sales, thrift stores, junk shops, and garage sales.  You ought to be able to find one for $50 or less.

If you want to run speakers, I've listened to the new Pioneer SP-FS51-LR, which is quite a bargain for $200 and available at BestBuy.  Not the greatest speaker on the market, but damned good for the price.  I don't think anything else competes.

For a source, I'd use the radio on the tuner and would hunt down a used Sony SCD-CE595 SACD player.  I got one for around $50 refurbished and I think used ones run around there.

That's how I'd spend $300 - and I think I'd be pretty happy with it, too.

Uncle Erik, can the older receivers take a newer cd player? I have seen a few and they don't have rca inputs labled CD. They have Aux and Tape inputs.

Also I plan on getting an equalizer. If I do get an equalizer does the receiver have to have a Tape input?

I plan on going to salvation army and goodwill. What old brands I should keep an eye out for?
