suggest me a new portable player

Thread Starter

I have my library ripped right now at 192kbps and I'm planning on upgrading to either 320kbps, vbr, or lossless (haven't decided on the format yet).  my 16gb ipod touch was fine before but I don't think it would fit my stuff if I upgrade to a higher quality rip, so I'm planning on buying a new portable player, and I'm looking for some suggestions biggrin.gif

here's what i'm looking for so far:

capacity:  has to be huge, at least 80gb or 12gb.  more would be nicer.  looking around and I see that ipod classics has 160gb.  the cowons and archos that I looked at maxed at about 32gb, which I think is not enough

style/looks:  i want something that looks classy/modern/sophisticated.  kinda like the high end cowons, archos, or the ipods.  I'm not digging the looks of the sansa clips and the fuze

OS compatibility:  i've always wanted to reformat my pc and install ubuntu, but itunes is the only reason why i'm not doing this right now.  So for OS compatibility, anything Linux compatible is nice, although I could probably live with an ipod if I don't find any other choices.

portability:  it has to fit in my pocket.  something in the size of an ipod classic would be ideal

extra features:  don't really care.  i had this ipod touch for a while and i don't really use these apps.  they're nice to have, but won't necessarily affect my decision

video:  also don't care

format:  mp3 definitely, lossless is a plus

rockbox:  also a plus if it's compatible (or if a port is in the works)

price:  about $250 or less

so basically, i need some suggestions on a good portable music player.   thanks guys

 some possible choices:

1) cowon j3 - 32gb internal + 32gb microsd = 64gb total. (going to be way over $250)

2) ipod touch 64gb

2) cowon x7 - just released - I don't think it's available in states yet -80gb HDD

3) ipod classic

that cowon x7 is lookin pretty sweet biggrin.gif

thanks

just a quick semi out of topic question, anyone know the largest capacity (builtin + expands) possible for flash players out there?

I was reading up about the cowon x7 and the one article made a comment saying that harddrive players are hard to find nowadays, which is probably true because flash is lighter and i guess more durable (less moving parts = less problems) than harddrive players

I think the largest you can find are some sony's with 64 inbuilt but no sd slot and many other with 32gb + 32gb micro sd like cowon j3

i was really looking forward for the x7 but that thing is huge.  i'm looking for something easily pocketable but i don't think x7 would be easily pocketable

any other suggestions for a large capacity player besides the ipod classic and the x7?

thanks

The X7 is big, way too big.

I'm still getting me one, since I need the larger sized screen + higher capacity.

me, i'm torn between the j3 and the x7

i really don't care about large screen size so the j3's size is perfect, but i really don't like the hassle of swapping sd cards just so i could bring my whole music library along

I would suggest you get the 160G Cowon x7. It's nice and big and can play movies also to keep you comfy. Get the white one. It suits girls more.
