ER4-P sound bore cracked. Suggestions?

*sigh* After being faithful to me for 5 years the red earpiece finally cracked. Here's my dilemma I absolutely love their sound signature and was considering buying another pair or getting the ER4-S (which kinda seems redundant to me since I can just buy the extra plug to convert the ER4-P to ER4-S) and an amp. Probably the Shadow or Arrow still kinda undecided on that end. Anyway I started to look around and also found another option... Re-Shell 'em does any one have any experience getting their ER4-P or S remolded by the company here in the states? (I can't remember the name right now but if I recall they charge about 80 USD and are located in Florida). I am open to different IEM's but would prefer these. Any suggestions are welcome or testimonials on the Re-Shell.

P.S. I have searched and have found some older threads on the remolding of the ER4-P/S but I was hoping to find more recent experiences.

call etymotic research. It is such an outstanding company that the folks there will help you with your problem even it is out of warranty and you probably won't have to pay a thing except for shipping.

Definitely give them a call. Their CS is typically pretty helpful and they typically charge a very reasonable amount if they charge you for a repair.

Well that's the thing I think I deserve either a brand new pair or to just re-shell them. I think if I buy them I will buy them from Etymotic themselves since they offer the custom tips themselves. I just wanted feedback to see if anyone had any suggestions besides getting this pair fixed. I apologize I didn't specify that in my first post.

And oh yeah I bought them used in the first place. These are my first high end pair I've bought. I've heard good things from the CK10 but I'm scared to deviate from what (To my ears anyway) Is perfect.

Sure, people have gotten ER4s reshelled by Fisher hearing. Theres impressions somewhere in the long Fisher hearing thread but if you have specific questions you can try pming bcpk. I'd say that if Ety wants anywhere near $100 for the repair, might as well do a re-shell.

Well if they are perfect to your ears then there really isn't any point in deviating from them is there? I wouldn't pay too much if they do want to charge a fee however but reshelling is not that cheap. Fisher is the cheapest option and it would still run you somewhere between 150-200. $100 for shipping+impressions, ~$30 for an ES cable and roughly $50 for impressions although that does vary.

The local miracle-ears hearing center located in sears where I live actually does impressions for only $20.  If you look around you can find some really good prices.  A lot of hearing aid stores don't usually do impressions by themselves but will do one for you for only the cost of materials if you ask.

The service you are talking about that is located in florida is fischer hearing. (inearz)  There's a huge thread about them on the front page.

If you have the opportunity, you might want to check out some other iem's too.  My first iem's were ety hf5's and I loved them to death.  But I recently got some triple.fi 10's and I have to say they've won me over.

edit:  oops, got them mixed up

has anyone ever actually posted photos of remolded er4's? I've been intrigued by that possibility for years, but I'm not sure how they'd turn out & what the sq deviation would be...

Thanks for all the feedback first of all. And yeah I think re-molds are my best option. And yeah it might be slightly more expensive but from what I've read the comfort level is sublime is fitted properly. Plus a nicer cable wouldn't be a bad thing. wink.gif

Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go look for that thread about the re-molded ER4's you guys are talking about.

If any chance you are not going to remold it, do give Ety a call. There was problem with weak, easily crack nozzle issue back in 2005/2006 (I think Ety switched to a different manufacturing process/material that caused the problem), and most people got free repair from Ety at the time.

Yep, That's all because we are talking about a products that has been in the market for 19 years and a company that actually does free repair from time to time for their old customer (the longest I heard is 10 years). Plus, no harm asking, right?

If it's true, that's amazing! A 10 year warranty! That's what I'd call great customer service!
