Does connecting headphones to xonar DX Ls+Rs channel cause impediance missmatch?

Hi everyone,

Just recently I decided it would be a good idea to connect my AD700 cans to the side channel L+R outputs of my xonar dx. This would enable me to connect my stereo + bookshelf speakers to the front channel L+R outputs and have my active subwoofer connected to the LFE channel with the left and right side channel crossover settings set to large so that the headphones receive the full audio spectrum.

With this setup I have my stereo set as the default audio device seeing as windows 7 routes 2 channel audio to the front channels unless otherwise specified by the application. By having an audio zone in J river media centre configured to play over the L+R side channels only, I am able to listen to music via headphones without having to ...Unplug the audio lead going to the stereo... Plug in the headphones... and disable the asus FlexBass crossover option.

Unfortunately for whatever reason when I have my headphones connected to the side audio jack on the xonar dx they have almost no bass whatsoever and boosting the bass via the eq doesn't have much of an effect either. Also sound is about 7db louder and seems to have a harsh edge to it. In comparison when the headphones are connected to the front audio jack the bass is much fuller and responds as one would expect when I play with the eq.

Interestingly enough none of these issues including the variance in volume are present when I connect either the subwoofer or speakers to the side audio jack of the xonar dx.

Does anyone know a way to fix the poor sound when headphones are connected to the side jack or alternatively a way to configure windows 7 to play 2 channel audio over the side audio jack by default.

Only the Front jack has a headphone amp.

So unless I'm running a headphone amp off the side channels I'm stuck? Well in that case is there any way to configure the side channel output as the default audio out or a way to configure the side channel as a separate default audio device within windows 7. I use J river media centre 95% of the time for music and movies and I have it configured so that I can easily switch between speaker and headphone zones. For applications such as youtube that don't provide channel routing options, It would be nice if I was able to play the audio through my stereo system without having to manually switch connections and crossover configurations.

Thanks for your effort! It is exactly what I need.
