CRT-fi

With the wide spread use of LCDs now for computer monitors and multiple other kinds of technologies including LCDs for TVs now;  It leaves me wondering who still uses and/or prefers CRTs for computing (mainly) and/or for a television in this day and age?  Why do you still prefer them?  Do you buy the cheap ones that everyone on the local craigslist or Kijiji are trying to get rid of for free or dirt cheap?  Are you the kind of person who also prefers the sound of hybrid or tube audio as well?  What do you like about them? What do you hate about them? [CRTs]

Trinitrons and SyncMasters were awesome looking top dogs as remember, but I cannot remember if they were the only top notch CRTs available.  I also cannot remember if the widescreen CRTs ever made it to North America.

Pictures and reminiscing are welcomed.

I've recently started wanting one for a computer monitor again.  The cheapness and the availability paired with no input lag has put me over the top.  (So cheap! I could have a multiple CRT monitor setup for less than $30).  It's been at least 4 years since I've had a CRT as a computer monitor.  LCDs have come a long way to get to the point were they are now (heh, the Game Gear's LCD screen (it wasn't the first but it was my first experience with color LCDs)), but they cannot compare to the last CRT I had (which was an iMac with a Trinitron (or was it a Diamondtron?) tube in it (~loved it~)).  Maybe it's just retrogoggles or maybe it was truely better.

Glorious days of the crt's. I had an LG flat tube, and the colors here awesome.

No lcd that I ever saw had that color balance and picture quality. No problems with gradients or things like that.

The only thing that I really hated was it's really big size and noise loud noise when powering on, and of course reading for long periods of time would make my head hurt, a lot.

I have always hated CRTs because I am very sensitive to refresh rates apparently I am in the 1% of people that can see the actual scanning of CRT even at refresh rates of 100Hz ( I have never found a CRT that goes higher then this to try out ). Someone once thought I was just saying that so I had them take four of our computers on campus and randomly put different refresh rates on them ranging from 60Hz to 100Hz and I accurately determined the order from lowest to highest refresh rate. The picture quality itself are usually quite good though but like I said the refresh rate or more accurately the scanning of the CRT drives me crazy.

Been using same small CRT for probably over five years. Won't upgrade until it dies.

Yep same here refresh rates kill me. Even on my macbook I have the brightness set to the max because of the flicker on low backlight. And some fluorescent light bulbs flicker a lot and that's an prescription for pain.

I don't mean to alarm you, but there appears to be a young woman living in your monitor.

I liked my last CRT that I had... I think it was Viewsonic or some such company. The first few LCDs I had were crap in comparison, but eventually I got a Samsung T240 and really enjoyed it-- then it exploded on me and I'm using an older Samsung somethingsomething as I'm too lazy to ship out my old one for repairs. A few of the newer LEDs have had me tempted though!

Not a fan of the satisfying clunk it makes when it's turned on?  It's one of my favorite things about a CRT. biggrin.gif  Yah they do take up an excessive amount of space.  Speaking of the gradients, I always love CRT's wide veiw angle (top to bottom).  LCDs colors tend to be darker at the top and lighter at the bottom when veiwed at the mid point of the screen (you notice this more if the same color is displayed on the entire screen).

I am quite sensitive to the refresh rates as well, they'll give me headaches if it's lower than 85Hz (plus I can hear them rooms away) and I only noticed the refresh rate if I move my head or I'm looking at the display out of the side of my vision.

Sounds like a start of an awesome story! ;D

The LED LCDs really are starting to close the gap.  They'll get there one day.

Ah yea I almost forgot about some fluorescent bulbs, augh those things can kill my eyes. I have not had any backlight problems with my LED backlit MacBook Pro at any brightness just wondering is your Macbook LED backlit or CFL? Also a lot of signs (like the wall street stock scrolling sign) just hate my eyes as well.

Oh by the way I am not sure if you know this but IPS display type LCDs fix the viewing angle problem that you speak of. The only problem with IPS panels is they tend to be a lot more expensive. Dell ( top end stuff ) ,Lacie,NEC,Eizo, and Apple sell IPS displays. With IPS displays brightness is even at every angle and the colors are much better as well. I personally own an Apple Cinema display which is S-IPS a variation on IPS technology. Most cheaper LCDs use TN panels which suffer with a lot of viewing angle and color problems.

I have heard of them and seen them but they are still out of my reasonable price range.  One day.  [IPS LCDs]

As much as I love tubes, I don't miss CRTs one bit.  I've always preferred LCD screens because most of what I do is text-based and LCD is usually crisper.  I don't usually watch videos and never play games, so a LCD is ideal.

Also gearing up to buy my first TV since '97, and haven't owned one since '99.  Back then, I had a 27" Zenith that seemed like a huge screen at the time.  Right now, I'm holding off for the after Christmas sales - I'm planning to buy a 55" LED backlit LCD.  I've been gawking at a few in the stores, since I never thought I'd have a screen like that.  They're beautiful.

Erik join the big screen club. While you're at it, grab a wireless mouse and keyboard (and LapWorks lapdesk) like I did and browse head-fi from your recliner!

Sounds like a good idea, I'm getting the new AppleTV and will see if I can browse with that and an iPad.

I may not be able to get up as often as I'd like, thanks to the new cat. She has gone from needy and pathetic to entitled.

It's led back lit. It only happens when the brightness isn't at max.
