AKG K518DJ

Hi Everyone,

I've been searching a lot in the forums, however, I have a few questions on the AKG K518DJ

As DJ headphones, are they durable enough for the wear and tear of using them when DJing? I mean, one specific part of the headphones which I worry about is the connection of the cups. I can't really explain this very well, but I'll try; There's a small part of plastic that connects the headphone cups to the hinges of the headband. From the pictures that I've seen of the K518 they look to be quite weak.

I'd like some insight from owners of the K518 regarding the durability of these headphones.

I've auditioned them at a store and they felt quite sturdy to me. If you want more durability, there's always the bigger brother in the K181DJ.

Any owners of the K518DJ with experience they can share?

Owned them before, sold it off to a friend. To the best of my knowledge, they're still in great working condition. The plastic arm that holds the housing to the headband is quite strong.

My only concern regarding durability would be the cable. The stock cable is pretty flimsy and thin. I recabled mine with some microphone cable and put a ty-fast and quickglue where they exit the cup. Combined with a neutrik plug they were very sturdy.

I am using this headphone for 1 year now. Its very durable. The sound is pro bass. I like the sound. It has good external noise isolation. The only problem is the clamping force. I reduced it by bending the metallic strip on the top. Now everything is fine but the noise isolation has reduced a bit.

I would rate it 4 out of 5. Good value for money.

I've opened one up before, and the hinges extend into the cup with a secure fit. I think you'd have to give the headphone quite a deliberate beating to break them; you'd probably sooner snap the headband adjusters than the hinges.

I have the K81s, I have a tendency to fall asleep with them on and throw them across the room in my sleep and they still look as good as the day I bought them, over a year ago. Between the cups and headband is a thick piece of plastic, I wouln't worry about it at all, the cable is the weakest point, and its held up pretty good to my abuse. These are actually my favorite pair of headphones out of what I've gone through so far, I bought them as portables, but I think they are better in a home system or DJ use. They drain my Fuze's battery pretty fast, but its worth it.
