dt770 mods list and suggestions (and opinions?)

i'm starting to get into audio stuff again and want to maximize what i have. a few years back i built a ppa v2 and bought a dt770/80, and that was the end. now that i'm out of school and have more free time at nights, i want to get back into the little hobbies i've picked up and tossed aside over the years, and this is what i've chosen smily_headphones1.gif

now before you cry "search!", i have. all the threads i've found are pretty old though, and i want to know if there's any more recent opinions on them or mods to be done. also, my intention is to find all the mods i can do at home for relatively cheaply. i am fully aware that i can get them darthed, but that's not what i'm looking for.

so here's what i've found through my searching:

recabling - this is an obvious one, and understandably debatable as to whether or not it actually does anything. for the sake of this thread though, let's assume that it is a real improvement to recable them. my searching has confused me as to how it should be done; i see people arguing back and forth about braiding or not braiding the wires because of crosstalk and such, but don't see any conclusion :/

blu-tack mod - as i understand it, it's putting blu-tack on the inside of the cups in various spots. does anyone have a link to a thread that's a good guide for the mod? i couldn't find one with my searching, just people saying they'd done the blu-tack mod or something like that. what does the blu-tack mod do for the sound? from what i remember from a long time ago, it's supposed to improve the bass; does it increase the quantity? tighten it, make it punchier?

removing the ring behind the drivers - as discussed here http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/320487/for-beyerdynamic-dt770-owners - what is this one supposed to do? the op says that it lessens the bass, but in other posts (i forget where now, but throughout my past couple days of searching around) i've seen people mention that it serves the purpose of dampening and controlling the bass, and without it the bass gets worse. again, confused D:

less boomy mod - http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/243588/beyerdynamic-dt-770-less-boomy-mod-lbm-mod-w-pics-56k-warning - involves the same ring as the previous, except now it's reinforcing it / making it stiffer, and is said to tighten up the bass. have more people tried this one?

switching pads - using the dt880 pads on the dt770s. not sure what this one does, i got confused by some of the posts i read saying different things again lol.

these are the ones that i've found; i saw someone mention putting dampening material inside the cups but in the same thread that same person advised against it. are there any others that i missed?

thanks smily_headphones1.gif

I also have an interest in this thread, sorry i cannot help though. Im looking into purchasing the 250ohm version in the future and would also be interested in anything anyone has to say about them.

Modding always perks up my ears!

dang. well hopefully with more people responding to the thread someone who can share their experience/knowledge will wonder what's going on and come in.

anything to improve sq overall is always welcome, but right now my main concern is tightening up the bass. as it is right now it just feels kind of sloppy redface.gif

Have you tried a 100ohm source resistor? Ignore this if you are using an OTL tube amp.

And sloppy compared to what? On what amp?

i have a ppa v2 that i built. what do you mean by 100 ohm source resistor? putting it in series with the output of my amp to manually up the load?

i'm not really comparing it to anything else specifically when i say it feels sloppy, it just sort of does *shrug* hopefully this doesnt come across as crazy.

how do i go about getting this thread moved to the diy forum? maybe it'll get more responses there redface.gif (made it here originally since i figured the headphone forum has a lot more traffic, but that didnt really pan out)

PM a moderator. Id reccomend uncle eric, he seems the most active of the mods.

Another thing you can try is plugging the port. There is one on each headphone, a ~1/4" hole behind the yokes. I prefer the sound of the 770's with the ports open, but ymmv.

If you do it, I would go from the outside with a piece of electrical tape or something. There is a mesh screen glued to the inside. pulling it off, which would be inevatable if you taped the inside might be bad.

ah, whenever people mentioned the hole before i always thought they meant the hole the wire comes out of to go from one cup to the other. i'll try that in a bit.
