For Sale or Trade:
***SOLD*** Original "Smeggy" Ziricote Thunderpants (Tuneable version) with New SR007 Pads. Beautiful wood cupped headphones.

Will Trade For: HD800
Will Ship To: Anywhere

Up for sale is a pair of beautiful original "Smeggy" Ziricote wood Thunderpants. These are closed back orthodynamic headphones which are TUNEABLE. The Thunderpants uses Fostex T50RP orthodynamic drivers in a custom wood enclosure.

This particular TPs cups are made from the rare and highly expensive Ziricote wood, which is also sometimes used for making expensive guitars. It known to have a big deep sound in the bass. It is slightly similar to Brazilian Rosewood but is more beautiful, better sounding, a lot rarer and therefore much more expensive!

I love the look and feel of these headphones but they don't have the sort of FR I am looking for. I prefer a more U-shaped FR rather than a flatter one. I recently sold some Audeze LCD2s for exactly the same reason.

Construction and condition of these TPs is really is top notch, - better than the LCD2 in my opinion, - especially the finishing of the wood. The finishing of everything is superb, - the cable is a silver plated copper affair, and is very un-microphonic unlike the LCD2 stock cable and much lighter and smaller too. Bear in mind too these were quite recently made and they also have removable baffles with screws, so the damping can be easily modified which is not the case for some TPs which are sealed and therefore untuneable. The damping is tuned for the SR007 pads the headphone come with. These pads were bought by Paul and are brand new and unused. They also come with some Denon style pads but they sound quite a bit better with the SR007 pads in my opinion.

Here is the description from Smeggy’s original advert from Head-case :

”These are the latest/greates and made with very expensive and exotic Ziricote. They have tapered baffles that are thinner at the rim than the middle so the pads fit well and you get the right amount of ear space for sound and comfort. The finish is Teak oil followed by True-oil. Once dry they were rubbed down with mineral spirits, lightly scuffed and given a couple of coats of vinyl sanding sealer followed by multiple coats of stringed instrument lacquer and finally buffed to a high shine with Behlens buffing compound.

The baffles are held in place with four countersunk brass screws on each side. There is a foam gasket to seal the cups and have one bass port. Very comfy as usual. The wire is 19 strand SPC with a teflon and kapton coating so they are pretty thin. The plug is neutrik.”

I am asking what I paid for these which is $SOLD with shipping and paypal fees on top (or gift paypal is also fine). Will ship worldwide.

Shipping cost with insurance:

UK: £8

Europe £15

USA/Canada £18

Hong Kong/Japan/Australia etc £20

This a great opportunity to own a pair of beautiful and unique headphones.

Alternatively to selling straight I would seriously consider a couple of trades, - one I am really looking for is a trade for an HD800 which I am eager to try (I will add cash of course). Not really interested in that much else, but try me anyway you never know! Please bear in mind I've tried all the Stax phones out there and more (a few I "made"), - tried all of them apart from the Omega I, and I resold all of them too!. None of them were right for me.

Please see my Head-fi and Ebay feedback below.

Cheers,
Colin

I agree with most of it, but the yamahas will not get you the treble you want, especially Yh1000, try a fostex though.

have you tried ultrasone? they are well known of their U shape sound.

sorry I cant stop my self saying something, your ad is worth reading although it's only an ad.

good luck mate

free bump for the Mighty Thunderpants.  These are awesome cans at a reasonable price.  Considered by many as the best closed cans available.

Thanks for that,

Sorry its such a long winded advert but glad you thought it was worth reading!

I agree with you, - its unlikely a YH1000 would have the treble I ideally want as its got a rainbow shaped FR (according to Kabeer), but I have experience of modding the YH100, - so I could try some mods on the YH1000 to get more top end. Kabeer told me the magic midrange kind of goes with the mods on the YH1000 though!

There have been a few rare exceptions with phones that have a prominent mid that I like, - the Stax NB Gamma was one of them, - its lacked top end and also bottom end but the mid was very nice even to me. So I would still be very interested to try a YH1000 and try it modded and unmodded, - its one of the very few phones with that sort of balance I would not usually like that I would still like to try. But hey what am I talking about, - Kabeer said I could hear his stock YH1000 sometime!, - gonna try to book a demo!

Thanks for the tip on the Ultrasones, - will have a look into it. I''ve not tried the older Fostexs either yet.

Cheers,

Colin

Thanks for that!, - agreed these are awesomely made, mighty closed backed phones and probably fantastic sounding for the majority of people, but they've just not got the treble I want. I've found putting SR007 pads on more securely/snugly make the midrange and the bass a bit more even but sadly the treble gets darker than when the pads make the drivers a bit further away from your ears  so yeah no good for me. People must think I am crazy, - the guy that bought my LCD2 PMed me tonight and he is over the moon with their sound compared to the other "high end" cans he had before! But again they did not have the treble I want/need, probably due to multiple reasons!

Cheers,

Colin

Estimate shipping cost to ZIP 33332,Germany?

Hiya,

Shipping to Germany would be about £12 (UK pounds). With full insurance probably about £15. I very much doubt it would be more than that. I would charge at cost and refund any differences

Cheers,

Colin
