So, here is my current headphone setup:
Source: Onkyo C-S5VL CD/SACD Player
Blue Jeans Interconnects
Amp: PS Audio GCHA
Headphones: HD650
The problem that I am finding is that the sound is too clinical sounding for me. There is not a lot of bass extension or even warmth from the HD650 with this setup. The upper-mids sound congested and there is not a wide soundstage.
In fact, I prefer to listen to lossless digital files with my iPod and IE8s most of the time over my home setup.
Can you guys offer any insight? From all descriptions, the HD650 should be my perfect headphone. I am not finding the warmth or bass extension they are known for.
Also, the CDP uses a high-end Wolfson DAC, and it has 5 different filters I can select. It doesn't say much of anything anywhere about how these filters affect the sound signature. It is hard to objectively test the effects of the filters, because you can't switch instantaneously between them while you are listening. You have to go through the crappy button sequence each time.
Does anyone know how these filters affect the sound? Or can someone recommend a warmer CDP for under $600?
