***DISCLAIMER: Cable atheists will be ignored. These are my personal experiences using my gear and ears.***
So it's been a busy weekend with 2 great aftermarket headphone cables for me to try this weekend. Friday/Saturday the Moon Audio Silver Dragon Version 3 for the LCD-2 and today was the DHC Molecule Cable for the HD800s.
This review will be more of a mini-review sharing my thoughts.
First off the construction is quite impressive. This has to be the most flexible aftermarket cable I've ever owned. Kudos to DHC cables for this feature. Makes using it a lot easier than a really stiff cable (like the stock LCD-2 cable....it's even quite a bit more flexible than the stock HD800 cable). The Furutech plug is about as good as it gets in my book as well. Both my Silver Dragon and DHC cable have this plug and it is just SOLID (and feels/looks great).
Sonically with the HD800s, (I'm using my MAD Ear+HD and Meier Concerto to test it against the stock cable) I find the treble is pushed back a bit. And for me and my tastes that is perfect with regards to the HD800s. On certain jazz albums with say the trumpet (especially muted), the treble can come off a bit too forward with the stock cable (correct me if I'm wrong, but the stock is made from a copper core that is silver plated). With the DHC Molecule, the treble seems in better proportion to the mids. Nice.
The bass seems to have a bit more impact as well. Not much, but the HD800s sound a bit fuller in that area also very nice! The sound stage and clarity (micro detail retrieval) seem unaffected at this point.
Overall, I really like how the HD800s sound with this cable...more than with the stock cable. As a result, they will be getting more head-time! Nice job DHC Cables!
