Hi All,

Hello fellow audiophiles, I need your precious advice, this is my first forum post ... so be gentle with me smily_headphones1.gif

I am seriously thinking about building a 3 way loudspeaker system from a DIY kit to replace my old (also DIY) 2 way Audax loudspeakers.

Based on my experience, my preference is for a 3 way large floor standing and not a 2 way + a sub, though some of the designs that follow (see below) do call for a separate enclosure for the large 12 woofer and some might treat that as a "sub".

After a lot of research I nailed down the options to the following, however I am willing to consider other options if one of you here thinks it is a better option:

1-Eton 11.2 Kit, 3-Way, Parts Only - Pair , see https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=35_37&products_id=366

2-Zaph|Audio SB12.3 ~ SB Acoustics 12", Dual Midrange, 3-Way , see https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8691{8}76{2}35

3-Eton Duetta , see http://www.lautsprechershop.de/hifi/duetta_en.htm

4-Eton empire,  see http://www.lautsprechershop.de/hifi/bau_empi.htm
(This kit actually ships with two Hypex HS 200 Sub-woofer amplifiers).

My current choice is the Eton empire, please let me thing what you think,
I shall be listening mostly to music, at present i am using the Beyerdynamic DT 880 coupled with Gilmore light headphone amp,  I plan on also purchasing the NuForce Icon HDP and I will also need a recommendation for a sub 500$ power amplifier.

Thanks,

Shlomo.

Does it have to be a kit? Even if you don't have tools, you can usually find a cabinetmaker/woodwork shop to cut the cabinets for you.

Down here in Arizona, a local shop charges me 50 cents per cut as long as I buy the wood/MDF from them. They have a really nice workshop, too, and I don't get charged for mistakes. It's a good deal; maybe you can find something like that near you.

One prolific speaker builder worth looking at is Troels Gravesen. I can't post his URL from the phone I'm on, but he has plenty of designs. One I've looked at is his "Poor Man's Strad." Nice three-way design with beautiful cabinets. Not that I really need another pair of speakers, but those are reasonably priced and seem to offer great sound. Take a look.

As for an affordable amp, I recently picked up two Adcom GFA-2535 amps for my Orions. Good quality and they sound nice, for about $200-$250 each. They are four channel, however, you can find the two channel GFA-555 and a few other models around the same price. You might be able to find an old Dynaco ST70 under $500 if you want tubes.

Dear Erik,

Thank you for your reply and for the info about the amps, I shall surely going take a look at them.

All the kits mentioned are shipped WITHOUT the cabinets/wood, this is something maybe I was not clear about, only the electric parts are included. So can you provide your input on that only?

Thank again,

Shlomo.
