Anyone still using Rockbox

looking to juice and spruce up my 5th gen 30gb ipod. -yeeaahhhh!

I have read many threads before, and  also in the last few days-yet still wonder how many people are still using Rockbox, and what benefits do they see past using the equalizer and music codecs.

Tomorrow I will visit a friend to reformat my ipod (I have a mac ,he has windows)to make installation easier, and yesterday I installed a new battery in my ipod in preparation.

Still on the fence as I do like the simplicity of the ipod os.

Thanks in advance for your feedback:)

The music codecs and EQ are huge, of course, but another benefit is the ability to not have to use iTunes if you don't want to.....you can load your files on it like you would on any mass storage device, instead of in the iTunes music folder that creates the weird folder names. Whether this is desirable by someone with a Mac, like you, I don't know, but for a Windows user it is a nice option to have.

And the different themes are nice to play with too.....and of course there are games, although I don't use any of them.

Rockbox releases the real potential of the iPod's SQ, something that the Apple OF limits. It's like a breath of fresh air on the iPod 5.5G. A real EQ,.....something Apple won't give it's users,.........

Oh well I`ll give it a go then. I would like to try out the EQ to improve SQ.

I will continue to use itunes for my syncing though.

Once you Rockbox it's very hard to go back, especially with a large library.  I also have a Touch and wife has a Nano 5G so still have to use iTunes for them, but for my 5.5Gs, RB all the way.

Wow!, that photo puts any second thoughts out of my head.I will reformat my ipod today and install Rockbox tonight.

It looks awesome.

Btw, what theme is that you are using in the photo?

Can you recommend any settings? Specifically for ATH-ESW9 headphones and Sennheiser MX-760 earbuds, That

would be great If you could.

Thanks EJ,

That one is ipodWidgets...Here is the link for several themes...ipodWidgets is towards the bottom of the page......Enjoy!...............http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?target=ipodvideo

In reference to the settings, there are so many, your best bet is to download the Rockbox Manual and try several out.  If you want me to email it to you, PM your email....If you have live albums or mixed albums, Rockbox plays them perfectly....So many options, so little time...

I have the Rockbox manual already thanks for offering to email it to me though,

Just looking through the many themes, the retro tape theme looks very cool. Also like the Pen and paper-kinda cute.

*Edit:And the Theme in your photo is the ipod widgets I see.

Props for Dream Theater, heatfan12! I just listened to Octavarium and it is very creative, diverse, and musical artistry. It is metal, but does not get bogged down in the specifics of the genre or sound too dark or grungy which I do not like. Most of their songs have a huge feel to them which is really cool.

As to ExpatinJapan, you should definitely use Rockbox. You can just load the original firmware again if you have to, but after using Rockbox, I doubt you will want to. I have it on my Sansa Fuze and Irver H120, and I can only imagine it will better on an Ipod. The sound effects are amzing, with bass and treble adjustments, 5 band customizable EQ, crossfeed, gapless playback, and more. Try it and you won't regret it.

well I installed Rockbox on my ipod today, fiddled with the EQ after searching the internet for recommended EQ setups.

I gave up and am now using some rockbox presets.

If anyone can recommend some settings for me I would appreciate it very much, thanks.

The sound is really better, I am surprised.

See my signature for my types of headphones I will using.

No one can really suggest EQ settings for you.....because everyone's ears are different. My method, is for each pair of headphones that I use, I spend some time with the albums I know the best, and tinker with the settings until the album sounds the way it is supposed to. I have a setting saved for each pair of headphones, but obviously, some need more tweaking than others.

Of course, you'll get quite a few people here that are totally anti-EQ, that give you the "I prefer it as the artist intended" line, but I would argue this..... how would the artist know what headphones each of us will be using, or what frequency responses our ears are able to hear? A well-executed EQ, like in Rockbox, leaves it up to the user.....you can adjust it for the flat frequency response many crave, the bassheads can boost their bass, the treble lovers can boost their highs.....see what I mean?

And don't forget, Rockbox allows you to adjust the frequency of each of the 5 bands, for the ultimate in control.

Any idea if RockBox would work w/ a 5.5G iPod that has been modded w/ a 240 Gb HD? Thanks.

There was a recent revision to allow for the use of larger hard drives, yes.

Are you planning to hook an Imod up to your Toucan/Boomslang combo, mrarroyo? That would be pretty cool. Oh, wait, I just realized there is no digital output on the Ipod unless you get the Cypherlabs Algorhythm solo- making for four boxes!

Congratz EJ,

As previously stated, the eq is something different for everyone.  Have fun with it.  Not only the eq, but there are many other features to play with.  Go into the Settings (Sound, General, Theme etc.) and browse them.  Within those settings there are more tabs and more settings.  Many, many features.

Cheers George!

Big DT fan here.  Excellent description- creative, diverse and artistry.  After so many years they are still rocking...
