On the drive from Yuma to Los Angeles yesterday, I got to wondering how many people grew up listening to a radio station (or maybe more than one) as a source of new music. Corporate radio isn't much these days and it seems like many younger people are using Internet sources to find new music.

Back in the 1980s, I spent a lot of time listening to a local station - KROQ 106.7. KROQ played mostly New Wave/Alternative music back then. My friends all listened and we formed our music collections around the KROQ playlist. KROQ is still around, but I'm not much interested in what they play these days.

So if you grew up with a radio station (or two or three) as a source of new music, tell us what station it was and why you liked it. If you never followed a radio station and followed other sources to find new music, I want to hear about that, too. Do you get recommendations from friends, use a website or maybe some other method?

I grew up with 100.7 WMMS in Cleveland, OH, in the 70's. WMMS was one of the early progressive/album oriented stations, and helped launch numerous artists. Great station back then, not sure about now.

Funny you mention KROQ, it could be the same KROQ we had in the NY/NJ area. I listened to KROQ all the time (they had classic/alt rock) until they sold out and became 92.3 "now", and they play crappy pop music. Now I just listen to Q104.3 (classic rock) or just my iPod.

I clicked yes, because I'm growing up now and that's all I listen to.

Yes!  Being from Cleveland I too listened to MMS.  But more so in the 80s and 90s.  Great radio then, now, not so much, but still a better station in the area.

In NYC, in the '70's and 80's WNEW 102.7 was the place to be for rock. They hosted all of the concerts around town and had all of the stars come in for a visit. Of course they played real vinyl in the '70's. We also had a great, more progressive radio station called 92.7 WLIR where they played bands like Nectar and Leon Redbone.

It's interesting on Sirius Classic Vinyl and Classic Rewind (!3 and 14) most of the DJ's (besides Dusty Street who broadcasts from the R&R Hall of Fame come from WNEW and WLIR.

I also listened to WRVR, which was the only real Jazz station in NYC (Besides WBGO (classic Jazz, which is public access with a very small budget in Newark, NJ), but they were a 5kW smaller station that turned classical and then eventually country. Now we have 2 Classic Rocks stations that play the same songs over and over again.

In St. Lou the first decent rock stations was KSHE and KADI fm. Prior to that it was KXOK am. This was late 60s.

I went into the Navy in 74 and San Diego's popular station was KGB. They sponsored a station co-ed softball team and played at the OB fields while the Chicken was still perfecting his persona. Played many a beer games on Sunday against those guys.

I remember KSHE 95 from the 70's, "Real Rock Radio".  Just checked and they still use that phrase.  Also remember their commercials used Rolling Stone's "Brown Sugar".  Wasn't really into music too much as a kid though, so didn't listen that much.  As a teen started listening 88.1 KDHX and an alternative music station from a community college.  Think it was 90.3.

KFRC and KYA on the AM band when I was a kid with a Panasonic transistor radio. As a teen/young adult I used to listen to KSAN and KMEL on FM when I lived in the Cali bay area. I think both of those are goners now.

I still listen to FM when I'm too lazy to think for myself. Out(up) here in Colorado, my $20 rat shack FM beam picks up both coasts.

Most of the new music I find comes from recomendations I find on these here forums. FM sometimes reminds me of tunes I used to like and now want on CD. Those are becoming few and far between though.
