Help with DAC..again!! - Page 3

I guess one mans 'musical' is another mans 'sterile'.

Nowadays, after wasting a fortune (and to much time) on all manner of interconnects I just use pure silver that are quite cheap of ebay, it just eliminates the cables from the equation.

Good luck with the Satch realmassy, I hope you let us know how it sounds.

PS. You might want to consider using pure silver internal wiring, it will let more through in the nicest possible way.

The Satch kit is cool...check out this passive transformer coupled output stage (scroll down the page)....it should work very well with the Satch (just a suggestion) http://www.kandkaudio.com/digitalaudio.html

Peete.

massy hi, if you don't need a balanced DAC then you might want to look into NFB2. Its supposed to be very musical. I'm still waiting for a balanced DAC only version. I'm also still on the hunt for an enjoyable DAC- I would like the musicality of DacMagic and the details and overall quality of bass of the Ref5. Good luck my friend.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'll probably go for the tube output stage with upgraded coupling cap...you know, I just discovered tubes and I can't get enough of them :-)

Actually I couldn't make up my mind between the NFB2, the Abrahamsen V6, the Havana (now balanced!) and the Satch.

Hopefully I did the right choice.

If musicality means better micro dynamics (and I'm glad computerparts too noticed that), the same micro dynamics that will help the listener to enjoy a solo piano piece, where notes come out clean, with body and with a natural timbre... that I'm after musicality.

But to me that is a description of natural (which I prefer to neutral) sound, not musical or tube like.

On a piano the sound produced by last octaves keys is different from the first ones, it's not just a tonal difference, and also there's a 45 decibel of dynamic range. A pianissimo must sound softer than a fortissimo, the difference must be clear.

Another example, a cello in a classical string quartets can not sound like a jazz double bass, cello is not as tight as a double bass, it is softer even during a pizzicato.

To my ears Ref.5 couldn't achieve that target, while the Valab can. And Ref.5 is more than $1000, which is a lot of money.

Am I still asking for musicality? I think I'm looking for correctness (is that a word?)

Exactly my search as well.  I've had the dac19 and ref5.  It's hard to find instrumental accuracy.  That was one reason why I was so annoyed with the dacmagic.
