Wyred4Sound DAC1 or Lavry DA-10?

Thread Starter

I’m looking for the best desktop DAC around $1000-1200 that has SPDIF input, balanced output, and at least 24/96 playback. I think I’ve narrowed it down to these 2 and I’d like to hear any impressions from people who have heard either one. I’m open to suggestions about other DACs that meet these criteria.

Also, a few questions:

1. Does the W4S DAC1 have 24/192 capability through SPDIF? I know that the USB on the DAC1 is limited to 16/44, but what about SPDIF?

2. How do the amps in both units compare? I’m going to be plugging in balanced D2000s, so they don’t need that much juice, but I’d still like a high quality amp until I can afford a dedicated external amp. I’m assuming the W4S has an amp, like the DA-10 does?

3. Does the W4S have a single-ended headphone output?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I used to own a LavryDa10, between the two I would go with the W4S

The DAC1 only does 16/44 currently, but a revision will kick that up to 24/96 soon I believe.

Wow! They must of changed it really, really recently as I checked it a few days ago and it still said 16/44. Now it really is a sweet deal.

Ok, so just to clarify what is the maximum bit/sampling rate of the DAC-1 through coaxial input?  And does the DAC-1 have a decent headphone amp if I'm planning on plugging in my headphones directly into the XLR outputs?

Dynobot, can you explain why you would choose the W4S over the Lavry DA-10?  What did you think of the Lavry?

People have mentioned that they could/would plug their cans directly into the XLR outputs of the Dac1 due to a favorable ohm rating [er something like that]

The Lavry [to me] renders a lifeless representation of music which has no pace or rhythm, at that time I had the Lavry for about 8 months after doing everything I could think of to make it come alive.  I purchased a Valab Dac just to see what it was about, the next day the Lavry was up for sale, 2 days later it was sold.
