Earsonics SM3 Appreciation Thread - Third Time is a Charm? - Page 102

Anyone know of any cans that sound like the SM3? Loving my DT770s still but they are losing some head time to my new HD439 on account of their sucked out mids...I've been told to wait until I can try them with a proper amp to really judge them, but I dunno...losing ground to $30 phones isn't promising. They are obviously technically superior and provide their own brand of enjoyment, but the fact that I find myself only using them for electronic music is discouraging.

I'm tempted to take the filters out too...but I am a chicken.  There is no going back once it is done, right?

I find that I want the SM3s brighter right after switching to them from different earphones.  But once I am listening for awhile, I get used to them and don't feel the need for brightness quite as much.  The same thing happens with my HD650s.

No going back AFAIK, doesn't seem anyone has found a place to purchase the dampers.

Actually these are probably them, but don't take my word for it:

The green knowles filter is the one used in the SM3, but the sound tube it's contained within may not fit. There is a way to remove them and afterward replace however. I did it with mine. All you need is a very small screw (slightly smaller than the sound tube) and a lot of care. You can screw it into the sound tube far enough to gain purchase, but not so far as to touch the Knowles filter, before pulling it out. Delicate operation, as go to far and you'll dislodge the Knowles filter, which will fall down into the housing. I've done it, but wouldn't recommend it.

That said, I wouldn't even recommend it sonically, as I found the filter'less sound shrill, sibilant and splashy. Others may like it. I believe one particular person has removed the green Knowles, and replaced it with a brown (?) one, which filters higher frequencies less, brightening the sound more subtly.

Interesting...and yeah the sound without filters is definitely brighter and prone to sibilance.

Yes, I did, they look custom-ey but somewhat expensive smily_headphones1.gif I can't wait for your impressions. smily_headphones1.gif now, i am starting to wonder how far we can push the SM3s, they respond well to de-filtering and I wonder how much improvement the molds will add. I am sure isolation will improve.

Yes it does, actually, it makes the soundstage more natural. Imaging is sharper and the treble now jives with the rest of the music. Of course you need to re-adjust your brain and give it probably a few days before making any assessment.

Looks like its the green one. But I cannot guarantee anything.

I am very sensitive to sibilance. I find the GR01 the Vanilla GR07 too sibilant for my taste, but the filterless SM3s are nowhere near that. But then again, people hear different so take my comment with a grain of salt.

However, I also wouldn't recommend taking them out unless you absolutely need to. My SM3 kicked the bucket a few weeks after ,I took out the filters. smily_headphones1.gif while I give no guarantee that de-filtering caused the issue, I wouldn't take any chances. When my V2s get here by end of the month, I would leave them filters on.

You just hit the "Quote" tab for all the post you want to use and it will put them on there separately.

How much difference is there between the SM3 amped and unamped? The source would be an iphone 4S, and the amp would be a portable amp.
