[Recommendation Request] <$200: Punchy Bass, Clear Mids/Highs, COMFORT

Hey guys! I'm currently trying to decide which pair of headphones I should get. I've currently got the Sennheiser HD280s, but they're not really well-suited for what I listen to and want to hear. I listen to a lot of electronic music, classic rock, and a bit of metal here and there, and the main thing I like to hear in all of these is powerful bass.

I tried on a pair of Beats just for fun, and, while the bass blew me away, I was definitely missing out on the rest of the song. Another thing I loved about them, along with the Bose and Skullcandy Aviators I tried was the incredible comfort of the cushions. The only problem with these headphones is the bad rap I've heard from over in these parts, and I figured you guys know better than anyone what headphones are the best.

I was hoping to buy within the sub-$200 range. I've seen recommendations for the Denon AHD1001s and the ATH-M50s, so I've already got an idea of what I'm looking for. Again, the main concern I have with finding headphones is the "oomph" of the bass and the amount of comfort. Also, I can't be bothered to lug around a headphone amp, as I'll be using these with my iPod some of the time. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

Have you looked into HD25-1 II? I got mine recently and they are great for rock and anything that wants tight bass, it can go quiet deep but be aware that to take advantage of that you would want something like a Cmoy with bassboost. Otherwise the bass will not amaze you as much as you expect (I was a bit dispapointed by that otherwise they sound great)

good review.

Ooh, sick! Thanks! The more suggestions the merrier. biggrin.gif

Any suggestions for something that doesn't require an amp?

Shure SRH750DJ have amazing bass. They are easy to drive and have a nice aggressive sound with lots of "oomph"

Like the Beats, they are bass heavy, but unlike the Beats the bass is very detailled and doesn't mess with the other frequencies.

They don't require an amp to shine, but like all decent headphones they will improve with one. A cheap Fiio E5 for example is already well worth the costs.

I would have recommended the D2000 but they are not portable by any standard and need an amp to perform at their best. Consider them if you plan to get an amp anytime in the future. You can manage with the ipod until then.

Oh man, these seem amazing! Read a nice review, and the sound seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. The only question I have left is about comfort. So, yeah. Are they comfortable? I'm looking for something along the lined of fluffy white clouds resting peacefully on my ears, but I'll accept slightly less than that.

I find them fairly comfortable. The earcups are bigger than they might seem on pictures and easily fully cover my ears.

The only part that could get uncomfortable is the headband, it is quite flat and puts all the pressure on a small spot on the top of your head.

It's not that big of a deal though, i just move the headband every 30 min or so. I find them more comfy than my HD25-1's and MS1i's for reference.

Sweet, thanks for the info. These are definitely being added to my list of options to consider. Anyone have any more ideas?
