I'd like to hear a few opinions the RE-ZERO and Westone UM2.

I'm new to high quality audio and I own a pair of Westone UM2's currently and love them.  Great upgrade from my UM1's.  I've been thinking about getting a pair of RE-ZEROs, though.  Many here seem to be fans of them.  First off, I just wanted to see if anyone disagrees that RE-ZERO sounds better than the RE0.

 

Secondly, I get the impression that most people think the RE line outstrips the UM2's, and I was wondering if that's really true.  I just find it so difficult to believe that something in that price range can blow such an enjoyable phone out of the water.

 

From what I can gather, the RE-ZERO is a bit more balanced sounding than the warmth in the UM2.  That accurate or am I reading things wrong?

 

Lastly, I was wondering about amp recommendations for either phone.  I haven't amped anything yet and I'd like to read up on anything you guys have to recommend.

I haven't tried the um2s, but i have had the RE0s and the ZEROs at the same time.

My preference is to the ZEROs, but they are both great IEMs.

The more forward mids and less aggressive highs was the reason i kept the ZEROs.

The highs do extend further on the RE0s, but the mids IMO sound dryer than the ZEROs.

I had the RE0s for 8 months and loved them.

I found the ZEROs suited my taste for smooth mids more as i like to hear up front vocals.

I never amped my RE0s and some say they shine more when amped.

You wont need to amp the ZEROs as they are 16 ohm, but if your DAP is prone to background hiss like the Walkmans you may hear a little hiss when there is no music.

No sign of hiss on the Sansa Clip+ though.

I have UM2 and all of the RE series. To me. the real upgrade from UM2 is RE252. As for RE0 and RE-ZERO, they all more like side stepping. Each IEM has its pros and cons and depends on how you like you music to sound, maybe you will prefer one over the others. But technically speaking, I'll say UM2 is very close to RE0 and RE-ZERO (in quality, but not in signature).

about amping the zeros

 

which one cheap,yet nice amplifier would you suggest for the zeros ?

 

i am talking about 30-40$ max

 

i am curious how this will affect them since my discman has some power but i could use some more....
