How to clean a leather jacket?

Thread Starter

Autumn, Canada, leaves, you know how that goes.

Anyway. Brown/tan leather jacket. Says "Kaiser Leather Italy" and "Made In Italy" on the inner lining. Also this was my Dad's jacket.

Not a motorcycle jacket, though.

Did restore the colors with a Grison (brand) balm. Many parts of the jacket were pretty badly faded, however this balm revived the colors. Thing contains beeswax, as written on the jar.

So later on, to actually clean this thing, shall I bring it to a dry cleaner? I do have the common sense of not chucking this into the washer.

Thanks.

Also, "Scandinavian scarves" jumped into mind for whatever random reason.

Yes, cleaners can rejuvenate a jacket.

I've used leather dressing for car seats on my motorcycle jackets, though, and it works well.

I used Pecards leather dressing -- excellent.

Beforewarned, I wanted to get a leather jacket dry cleaned. Only a few people do it. They do it by hand with chemicals. Most dry cleaners will"accept" the jacket, then they send it off to a specialist. Average price is about $74 to clean and turnaround time is a month to six weeks. Price vary widely, so call around. I found a difference of up to forty buck. Weird, I know.

I didnt want to fork out 75 bucks so I read around. Used a sponge and laundry soap/water mixture to clean the lining with a sponge (to wash the cloth lining without soaking the leather),. Then to get the smell out, people recommend putting it in a dryer on low heat with a couple Bounce (or some other brand) fabric softener sheets. Worked great for me. Keep an eye on it when its in the dryer, though. But mine stayed in the dryer for about 45 minutes, no problem. Then I used Pecards to refresh the leather and make it supple as new.
