looking for active speakers for under 250£ (M-Audio, Mackie, KRK, Yamaha?)

Hey guys,

I am looking for some speakers to replace my pair of M-Audio AV40s that I bought a few weeks back. The sound of the AV40 are just not clear enough for me.. also I get the feeling that voices are somewhat subdued compared to my headphones frown.gif

From what I've read, people seem to recommend (in the sub 250£ category): Audioengine A5 (but they are supposedly overpriced and too bassy, so I will exclude them), M-Audio BX5A Deluxe, Mackie MR5, KRK RP5 and Yamaha H50M, however I haven't found any direct comparisons between those.

I would be grateful if people owning any of those speakers could comment quickly on the soundquality/type of sound each produces or even compare between speakers. Basically, I'm looking for speakers that are not too dry, but reproduce music fairly faithfully (no bloaty bass or extended treble!). As to listening to them myself, I would, but I have just moved to London and don't know my way around (student).

Also please bear in mind that I'm relatively new to speakers with the AV40 being my first pair (was looking for some speakers to "replace" my HD600s since being a student means having people around in my room quite often..).

I'd appreciate any input!

I only briefly hear the RP5 and H50m side by side in fairly bad condition but the Yamaha seem to got a beautiful and neutral mid-range and more revealing while it lacking the bass and punch of the KRK but keep in mind the sound change a lot depending of recording, room, mood etc... opinion are so un-reliables in audio.
