Eastern Electric DAC vs DacMagic

Good day everyone,

I would like to know if the Eastern Electric Dac is a huge improvement compared to the Cambridge DacMagic. The reason I am asking is that I am looking at my final step in my audio trilogy quest, i.e. a Dac to go along with my Senn HD800 and my WooAudio 6SE...

I do have a DacMagic, but it's used with other equipment in my bedroom.

I was wondering if the EED would make a big difference or should I wait to buy something like the Wyred 4 sound Dac 2 ???

Thanks for your help

What kind of sound are you looking for? Neutral/monitorlike or softer, warmer? Have you read the reviews on both W4S and EED on 6Moons.com? There is a pretty good comparison of the two there...

I haven´t heard any of those, but judging from the components used, I think any Sabre32 DAC will be a big improvement over the two Wolfson budget chips in the DacMagic. By the way, will you be using the DAC via USB? If yes, there will be an improved version of the EED soon with improved USB input... Currently that´s actually the weakest point in it (check the 6Moons review).

Thanks.... I'll do the reading..... I do use the USB with the DacMagic, but with the M2Tech usb to SPDIF key.....It made a huge improvement in the sound quality...

I have read the W4S review and it's indeed very interesting.... Antelope Zodiac could also be interesting....the problem I will probably encounter is that I'll have to purchase without listening to it in the first place as none of them are sold in Montreal....

You're looking at a big jump, from 400$ for the DACMagic to around 1500 for the Wyred or Zodiac. I strongly urge you to take an audition before coughing up so much dough. When the DAC is so expensive, synergy becomes even more of a key. For 4x the price, I'd be pissed if I got 10 percent more on performance. Would you?

You are absolutely right....and this is why I seek for feedback here.... For all the reading I have done, I narrowed down to a few DACs, and these two are the one that interest me the most....

I contacted Wyred 4 sound in California who directed me to the distributor in Canada who directed me to the distributor here in Quebec. I am waiting for him to rent the Wyred Dac2 for a few days.... Now I am in the process to find a way to listen to the Antelope....

This is not an easy search. For sure I will keep the Senn and the Woo for a very long period of time. I wish I'd do the same for the DAC....therefore, before spending between $1500, I must make sure the sound pleases me....

The DAC is most probably the thoughest piece of equipment to buy between the Headphones, the headphone amp and the DAC....at least, it is for me...

I have the CA DAC magic.

I just received the EE Minimax... just out of the box, for me its a clear winner via coax/with the tube output. With the SS, I am not so sure.

A disclaimer though, I havent done a side by side comparison yet, since this DAC is supposed to burn in for about 100 hrs. Everything else is the same though, cables speakers, room etc.

The build quality seems better/as good as the CA DAC magic.

More impressions to follow... along with some tube rolling :))
