no set-up - pretty much these headphones and the headphone amp as well.

Are they HP-1 or 2? (3?!)

Melos Sha-1; Sha-Gold and Joe Grado HP1/2 have good synergy with HP1000. Unfortunately they are just as hard to find.

Greetings, Take a look at www.headphonerevoews.org under Grado HP1000 Headphone Reviews as there is an excellent review by Senior Member 003 dated 11 Sep 07 discussing performance and price, you may not want to part with your headphones.

I think they are 2 version.  How do you tell 2 from 3.

nice reviews as well

You really can't if the lettering is worn off. FWIR the drivers in the HP1 and HP2 were more closely matched than the HP3. The HP3 also seems to be less desirable than the other two and I've read some reports of people removing the lettering of the HP3s and passing them off as HP2s to get a higher price. Of course I have no first hand experience except at a meet with some HP1s so I could be off.

HP1 have the polarity swithes; HP2 have not. HP3 are the same as HP2 with less precise drivers matching. The following will tell you about that and more.

I have also read that the HP3 headphones did not have the Joseph Grado Signature Ultra-wide Bandwidth Reference cable.

Beautiful, with completely intact lettering. Every bit of $2k, imo.
