"At Last: Mobile Fidelity Delivers the Definitive-Sounding Edition of Searing 1983 Debut

Hybrid SACD Mastered from the Original Tapes and Drenched with Tremendous Microdynamics and Natural Tonality ()

Couldn't Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step, and The Sky Is Crying Also Available on Hybrid SACD from Mobile Fidelity

This staggering 1983 album has been remastered and reconfigured multiple times, yielding sporadic results. Mobile Fidelity finally gets it right: Mastered from the original master tapes, this hands-down definitive digital version brings Vaughan and Co. into your listening room and places them at your feet. Vaughan’s trademark Fender Stratocaster has never sounded more real, electric, or authentic on record.

Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition hybrid SACD brings the images Vaughan’s scrunched-up face, closed-eyes appearance, quick-draw fingers, and cowboy hat into pristine focus. More importantly, the searing tones from his guitar and every touch of his pick on the strings are captured with extreme delicacy, so you don’t miss a note. The soundstage is deep and wide, and the microdynamics simply pop. This is the closest you will ever come to hearing Vaughan perform in Antone’s, circa 1982.

Order your collector's copy from Music Direct today to ensure the lowest possible numbered edition!"

Just wanted to give a heads up to my fellow Head-Fiers. It says October 2010 (which is now! ) for Texas Flood, the others don't have release dates so they may be staggering it. Pre-order also available from Acoustic Sounds.

Yes, I'm a little excited...

Cool news.

I just hope they didn't screw it up.

Amen to that. If anything I'd be most upset on missing out on what could've been not the money I would be out.

I agree. With audiophile issues, the let down is the "what could have been..." rather than losing some money. FWIW, I think the original CD issue sounds rather good dynamics wise. It's a little bright and thin but not bad by any means.

Yeah I have no issue with the common CD masters. Actually I just got the Legacy edition of Couldn't Stand The Weather which sounds phenomenal. I probably would've tried to find copies of the original SACD releases now that I have a SACD player though, so this is saving me an untold amount of cash.

I save a ton of money by simply avoiding these audiophile remasters and just getting the 1st pressings. I only buy them if I am 100% sure that they will be a huge improvement over the current releases.

If I were you, I would just EQ the regular CD's. To fix Texas Flood, just leave the bass range alone then, raise 1,000 cps by a few db to get that real Strat sound and lower 2,500 cps and 3,200 cps by a few db and you're good to go! Of course, this just a general map but in general, it's a good starting point - you'll open up the soundstage, you'll get a warmer sound and the guitar will sound amazing.

That's very useful information, thank you. Unfortunately/fortunately? I don't own the all of the albums right now, just a greatest hits and Weather so this works out perfectly for me.

I've got the original vinyl version.

I think I'll just stick with that.

Vinyl Rules!  (but not always)

Cheers.

Well after a few mishaps by UPS and Fed-ex I finally got my ears on this new master of Texas Flood.

I tried to find a flaw with the recording (which I'm not sure I did or not, see below*) but it's just all too perfect, instrument separation, tonal character, etc.

So you may imagine I am quite pleased. :D

*One thing I noticed was that once or twice on the album at the end of a guitar "groove" I could faintly hear a "ghost lick" (lol). I've noticed this on other well-recorded music as well (Hurt) and most likely it's just something from the original tapes but with my setup its quite noticeable and a little detracting from the aural bliss.

Thanks MoFi!

By "ghost lick", do you mean a "print through" on the master tape?

I wasn't aware of the term but I googled it and yes that's exactly what it is, thanks.

Received my copy of Couldn't Stand The Weather today. Switched over to Amazon and saved $7 in the process which was nice. Listening to it right now it seems that MoFi got it right again.

Cheers!
