which DAP to get? -> S:Flo 2, Hippo Gumstick, Cube C30, RoCoo-A?

Hello I'm buying new IEM's this week and a DAP too, I need a little help deciding.

First of all, I'm ruling out HiFiMan, a little expensive and I don't need a DAC.

Second, I'm ruling out Cowon S9, I've already had one and I'm one of the few people that didn't like the Cowon S9, I sold it within a week, I found the sound to be too 'filtered' or 'veiled' if you will, and I felt like there was an artificial eq curve even without the eq turned on which is annoying, I want my DAP to have a 'raw' and neutral high-quality sound and a few half-decent eq settings on top of that, I usually choose the "pop" eq setting, or I peak the sub-bass, lower the mid-bass, increase upper-treble. I also prefer my DAP to have some kind of reverb/3D settings.

Oh and I don't mind background hiss at all, when I listen to music I tend to forget it's there, I rather have background hiss than some kind of filter that removes it, I know this from experience.

RoCoo-A seems ok, but it doesn't have any eq whatsoever, which is a minus, however I'll still consider it.

This leaves me with the S:Flo 2, Hippo Gumstick and Cube C30, which one will suit my sound preferrance the best?  I don't care about fancy UI and a big screen for videos and trash, I already have that on my mobile phone, gumsticks are fine if they have good sound quality which is why the C30 and Hippo are within my consideration.

Should I pre-order the S:Flo 2 16GB, and wait for it?  Or should I buy the Hippo Gumstick and Cube C30? price and storage will be roughly the same.

I'm purchasing my new IEM's and DAP this week, wednesday I think, only in Singapore for 2 days so I can't hesitate, upgrading my portable solution from a sony gumstick and A-Jays Three, and will be using my new portable solution for at least a couple years I hope and I listen to music on the go every single day, so any help is really appreciated, thanks! =)

Where are you at?

I am not saying not to buy from foreign lands. It will cost you time and money when you need to exchange, repair or return. Beside that, those are not polished products, can you live with "Beta" product?

I have good luck with all of my Chinese players, but some did not. Best wish.

If U go Singapore go to Jaben and make your choice there, being there you can make bundle deal ,saving quite a bit and if U do not know where to find them look in their site, location is very central and easy to find, near Funan and Peninsula Hotel.

david1978jp ->  I'm in Jakarta at the moment, going to Singapore to renew my Visa (can only stay here 1 month at a time..).

I can live with beta products, in some ways I find it cool because it's a bit unique and glitchy like you're navigating a C64 or something.

sashava ->  Yes, I'll definately be going to Jaben, that's where I'll be getting my new IEM's and most likely one of their portable amps or a hippo gumstick.

If I get the Hippo, I'll buy the C30 as well, if I get a portable amp I'll be using it with the S:Flo2/T51 (if there is any difference in sound quality).

In Singapore now (surfing via free internet access the airport).

I'm leaving again tonight, business in the morning and then buying new IEM's and a DAP or amp tonight, can't wait.

P.S.  There's several stores at the airport with a pretty good selection of earphones, Sennheiser OMX 980, Miles Davis Tribute, Lady Gaga Heartbeats, Audio Technica CKS90 and a Jays and Shure stand where you can demo their line-up.

Apart from fantastic shopping Singapore airport is very clean and organized, I was chilling out in the cactus garden with cacti imported from all over the world.

Welcome to sg!

Personally I dun really like the Hippo gumstick becos the bass is too bloated! frown.gif

Still prefer the sound quality of Cowon.

lol I think nearly all DAPs will sound bloated compared to the thin bass on the Cowons.

Hello, I am now in full ownership of a new Hippo Gumstick. !

It seems like I will skip the S:Flo 2, and that I will also acquire the Cube C30.

I can't post my thoughts on the Hippo Gumstick... yet... because they would be coloured and clouded with my emotional excitement.

Can you please compare the C30 and gumstick once you have both? I am interested in knowing if the C30 is the same as the gumstick.

For sure!  I can compare with my Sony gumsticks as well.  I want the Rocoo-A to complete the collection but the company seems fishy and I'd rather spend the money on sacd's or something.

where do you buy the gumstick from?
