PIMETA v2 and occasional 'click' noise

Just finished stuffing the board and hooking up the IO jacks, not cased yet and is just hanging out in the panavise.  This is my first DIY audio project, I've soldered a few simple electronics kits before and I have a background in ECE (I design microprocessors for a living).

Amp has OPA637s for OPALR and an OPA627 for OPAG.  They are mounted using sockets.  The OPALR guys actually have two levels of socketing.  Board -> socket -> Brown Dog adapter -> socket -> opamp.  Power supply is a 24V Elpac WM080-1950.

Now onto my symptoms.  I have an occasional 'click' in both channels, very reminiscent of the noise you hear with viny records.  I'm pretty sure it's source independent but to be fair I haven't been using very nice sources during debug (a cheapo discman and my cell phone).

I've used both a pair of Sony MDR-V6's and a pair of Sennheiser HD-600s.  Could this just be due to the wall wart?  Also my input RCAs are just dangling in air and not grounded to a case.

I've measured the DC offset from IG to the output pins and they are all very very low, less than 1 mV.

picture attached... Am I just expecting too much?

thanks!

Hmm, so I think I might have found the problem.  I decided to do another pass of cleaning the board, and when I got the amp hooked back up together I had garbage coming out of it.  Turns out that I think my molex connectors are dodgy... The solder connections looks solid, but I squirted some flux on there and hit them again with the iron to reflow them.  I also popped the crimp pins out of the non-board side connector and eyeballed the crimp connections again, looked fine.

Hooked it back up and with some wiggling of the wires where they entered the connector things sound awesome.

My new question, does this jive with everyone's experience with these?  because the wiggle the wires thing affects the connectivity I suspect the connection between the crimp connector on the wire and the pin in the header.  The 'spring' parts of the crimp connectors look fine, and they are inserted the right way.  This won't be a big deal once I case this guy up, since the wires won't be moving, but still, kind of annoying.

What gain are you using?

What's the amp's quiescent current?

I don't need to point out to an EE that you've got more parasites there than an alley rat, do I? smily_headphones1.gif

I'm not saying it's the problem for sure, just something to look into.  The easiest way to rule it out is try something more docile in OPALR.  If the symptom goes away, and especially if the amp's Iq is high, I'd guess borderline oscillation.

Probably not.  The WM080 is pretty good.

PIMETAs don't seem especially RFI-prone.  Lots of people put them in plastic or wooden cases, with no ill effect.  If it's anything like that, I'd guess it'd have to be a pretty strong nearby source, like a fluorescent desk lamp.

I've always found Molex KKs to provide pretty good connections.

Can you remove the dodgy pins from their female shell and take a nice macro pic?

Thanks for the response!

I felt dirty stacking that many sockets...

Yeah, a quick google search didn't turn up any widespread issues with the KKs so it's probably a personal problem.  I've had the amp running for about an hour now and the funny thing is now when I wiggle the wires in the shell there isn't any change to the sound, unlike when I first powered up the amp.  I have a feeling debug is half the fun of DIY audio.  Anyways, I'll steal my fiancee's canon point and shoot tomorrow and try and get a good macro pic of one of the pins.

thanks again!

Pics of a KK pin that was being problematic...

From what I can see, it looks okay.  The main thing I can't see is whether it's solid or stranded wire.  Stranded works better for this sort of thing.
