RS1i > MAD Ear+ HD > Yeah baby!
Get a setup that can run them balanced. The RS1's become so much better. My gear is primarly portable/transportable and the RSA protector makes them sing. I have not heard it, but many people are saying the iBasso Toucan/Boomslang balanced setup is on par or even better.
I'm sorry, there is little reason to drive RS1 in balanced mode, they don't require almost any voltage or current to get to ear-splitting levels with minimal distortion.
Ture... it does not take much to drive Grado headphones, but my recommendation this has nothing to do with volume levels. Balanced provides better control of the drivers since each can be driven indepentant and with more control. The sound of the RS1's in a balanced configuration and a single ended configuration can be heard rather easily. I have personnely made the switch along with a friend of mine. This is my opinion and I stand by this. I use to think it as bull, until I heard it. I am actually thinking about how I can go balanced with by home system now as well.
There is more that enough discussion and detail about this in the Protector and Toucan/Boomslang threads that I will no longer discuss it here.
I didn't really notice a difference between balanced and unbalanced mode when I ran my RS1 off my balanced Beta22, fed by Buffalo DAC. Guess people hear differently.
