Just a thought! Have you considered using your PC that is allready upon your Desk to play your CD's. For Portable use I use my old Pannasonic SL-SW860. This replaced a Sony D-307. I bought the 860 in 2000 and it has not given me any problems. The sound from the Line out is good for a portable, However not on par with Better Home units. The sound of the 860 is warm and smooth however not overly detailed. In comparrison to a good home unit the Bass and treble is Rolled off but the sound is real clean. I would avoid Entry level home units most are nothing more than a portable put into a big case. My SL-SW-860 sounds alot better than an Entry Level Home CD or DVD player.

If you want small size on your desk and good quality, then why not an iPod with full wave files?

Battery life won't be a concern since he can use the Apple adaptor and he could use the lineout from the dock. Same would apply for the Karma as well.

The iPod measured quite well in Stereophile and they indicated it had better measurements on the test bench than many budget home CD players.

Thinking about it a bit more, perhaps the Karma would be better since you could use FLAC. Then again the iPod is now available with a 40GB HD, while the Karma seems to only be available in 20GB sizes.

I've got a different idea.

Minature DVD player with SPDIF out -> ART DI/O (Moded or not, get the powersupply upgrade) to your Larocco PPA.

This should provide good sound, much better than a portable. If you get a modded ART DI/O i've heard this badboy can compete with the best of the 500$+ CD players but will most likely fit ontop of your amp.

Minature DVD players with SPDIF outputs are neither hard to find nor expensive, either.
