I am waiting on a competitor to the ipod touch and its killing me. With the base price and the need for an amp with bass boost, its not cost effective. The cowon players are the closest thing but only for music and video files. for games and apps I am waiting for an alternative and really want kindle and netflix support. I know android netflix isn't out but I expect it soon. call me an optimist. The archos 32 is tempting but I find it hard to pull the trigger with the tease that is the 43. Release it already. I would buy an android phone but without a contract they are more expensive than the ipod. Is there soemthing out there I am missing or should i just shut up and wait?

what's wrong with the Ipod touch? I-Tunes? Steve Jobs? Mac? I was thinking myself about getting an Ipod Touch.
Price, I tunes, and rumors of SQ issues. mainly price.

Archos 43 is available for pre-order here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6744585&CatId=5996
Says it will be available 10/31. I'm trying to decide myself if I should get this or wait out the Samsung Galaxy 50/YP-MB2.
life saver...10/31...I can wait that long. I wanted to love the galaxy, but I didnt like what saw of the galaxy at first review, especially considering it was more expensive. I prefer larger than 3.2" screen. I do like that it has a gps chip though. I can deal with google maps in a mapquest style situation. better than nothing when my tom tom is being dumb dumb.

I'm very tempted by the 43, especially now that it has a fairly firm release date. My only hang ups are the resistive screen and no access to the official marketplace (although from what I've heard apps, and possibly even the full marketplace, can be sideloaded). The full marketplace, capactive screen and gps on the galaxy would be nice, but who knows when it will come out in the US (samsung seems to release products in Eurpoe and Asia before the US, and I have only seen one website in the UK with it up for pre-order so far, so it could be months before a US release). On the other hand I've had a Samsung P3 for a little over a year and the screen is almost completely unresponsive, making it basically unusable, which makes me hesitant to buy another samsung.

Cowon (iAudio) have some capacitor-type touchscreen PMPs. Unless you need a "flexible" OS and WAN feature, Cowon machines should be good.
Owned an Archos 7, huge thing, hard disk was ultra problematic. Sold it after hundreds of crashes.

There's a few good options with capactive screens, but I'm looking for an android device.
wifi and apps are something i am looking for or I would already have a j3. heck, if the j3 had a 4.3 screen I would still have one.

Nobody needs wi-fi and apps. Really, you don't. Life's already too complicated and full of junk.
Yea, nobody needs wifi, and apps. That is also true for music in your pocket, a cell phone, cars, a house, etc.. How do I know? Mankind survived without any of these for thousands of years.
This is about wants. If the O.P. wants it then he may as well pursue what it is he wants. Wait, I think he's doing that already!
The Philips GoGear Connect may be a myth. I sure haven't seen it available anywhere I shop. I haven't seen any real reviews of the Archos 43 either. As is true with most things, patience may be the wise choice. Good things come to those who wait.

Well, it hasn't even been officially announced so this won't meet your level of impatience but MS is supposedly coming out with an updated Zune that will incorporate the new Metro UI. Plus, they are quickly ramping up their Zune Marketplace offerings.
I feel your pain though, OP. I dealt with the absolutely craptastic iTunes to use my iTouch. It really is a wonderful gadget that is just absolutely throttled by the ridiculousness that is iTunes. I recently got a Droid 2 which has replaced my iTouch though I listen to music on my iMod so I am carrying two devices. I don't mind since I was carrying two anyway - a feature phone and the iTouch. Now I maintain and listen to my podcasts and audiobooks on the Droid but leave the music to my iMod. It is like a breath of fresh air ridding my system of iTunes.

Music in your pocket is a must - its the only way to survive when confronted by humans outside.
Cars are pretty evil. Sooner they go and are replaced by jetpacks, the better.
Cell phones are useful. But apps and internet on them are a step too far.
Houses are good, but not portable. Unless you live in a tent. Or a caravan.

Philips GoGear Connect looks absolutely rubbish - I had a play around with one and I wouldn't recommend it, squishy screen, slow interface and just not worth the £200 or so.

Glad I decided it wasn't a device for me. Android on a portable media player is still "iffy" at this point, but I think Archos is finally close to getting it right. I actually have some faith in them.
