Unknown, rare, but fantastic artists you think people should know about

Thread Starter

I was thinking today that some of my favorite artists are not particularly well known. I find it intriguing that there is other artists out there that I potentially would love just as much, but have not heard of.

In addition, most of us, I assume, know of an artist that we think is fantastic, and that we feel should get more recognition for their work - or we want to tell about this artist to others!

Usually it is sort of hard to "promote" this artist of yours since others might not agree that this artist is so fantastically special. But some might! So here I'm suggesting that we write about one or more artists we think is especially talented, but not widely known. This could be an exciting way of discovering more music that you might enjoy!

What is "not well known" is of course hard to define, but I'm just going with my gut feeling.

I'll start with an artist I discovered when I was last in Paris with my family. In this tiny antique shop they were playing some fantastic music, and we asked them what it was. I later went online, googled a lot! And finally found the cd through a German second-hand shop.

His name is Yves Teicher, he plays the violin, and many different styles, mostly jazzy, some stuff inherited from classical, IMO an extremely talented violinist, a little crazy, and something I had never heard before. He has a website, and I recommend to have a listen to the tracks on his cd "Fiddler on the groove": http://www.yvesteicher.net/fiddler.htm

Hope this idea isn't too dull and that others might contribute!:-)

edit: just in case somebody would want to start thinking that I'm trying to promote any artist, that is absolutely not the case. I'm a 21 year old student form Norway having no affiliation whatsoever with any artists!

No it's a great idea.  Thanks for the tip, and I will listen to your guy.

Now this guy has been around for 40 years, getting critical acclaim but not much popular.  Except things have been turning around this year.  Richard Thompson.

Not exactly unknown, but definitely not known enough: OCEANSIZE.  I cannot get enough of this band.  Every album they made is stellar.

two great artists from the sixties that are not so well known (compared to say nick drake or bert jansch) are Jackson C Frank and Duncan Browne. (first two albums)
