I guess it depends what you want out of this hobby.

 

If you just want to get the best sound you can right off the bat, so you can start enjoying the music and forget about the setup, then it makes some sense to make your first purchase your last, and go right for the best stuff. Plus this approach can be cheaper and less time consuming.

 

Having said that, starting off 'cheap' and working your way up has it's advantages. In a hobby as subjective as this, it makes sense to start on the lower priced gear so that mistakes don't cost you so much money. There's something about trying out different equipment which in itself is enjoyable, especially if you're a gadget freak! Also, you stand more chance of ending up with the sound your really looking for though experimenting.
