Still going over all the responses and checking out your recommendations.

My wife added a new request--she wants FM radio! Looks like the newer nanos and some of the sony's offer this ... not sure about the sansas. EDIT: found out the Fuse has FM radio ...

Thanks again to all of you for all the great input!

So does the Clip+.  Seriously for <$150 you (in my opinion of course!) have to go Sansa.

I always found the Sony players very easy to use (I have a S739 and an older A series player) just because the physical button controls could be accessed in my pocket. My iPhone 4 that I use now bugs me for the same reason by lacking physical controls, meaning I have to take it out of my pocket to do anything except change the volume. If you get a pair of earphones with a clicker and a mic though, then they become very very easy to control - especially since the new iPods allow voice control. (Not sure if the Nano's allow this.) The iP4 sounds great though (better than the Sony for me).

I don't know about how easy to use people find iTunes. It seems from these forums that its a hated piece of software, though it runs nicely on my Mac and I guess the vast majority of iTunes users would have kicked up more of a fuss if it really was that terrible. If your wife downloads music, then a drag and drop player might work better, but buying things off the iTunes music store/ ripping CDs is very convenient if you don't mind actually paying for music.

I think in general terms though, your wife will like an Apple player. Most people do, because they are very slick, with an endearing design and just a nice experience to receive as a gift. If you get an iPod nano and wrap up the box, she may think you are proposing again...

kinda outdated, but how about a D2+?

Rather good SQ(BBE+), easy to use and well designed menu, long battery life, packed with features, FM Radio, not that big but the design may be a little unlikable for some.

lol, the guy already made a decision, it is a fuze...

the cowon D2+ is no longer available as it has been discontinued.

The clip is nice, but the battery capacity cannot compare with the fuze.

I sold my D2+ - didn't like the design of it and hated the bass roll off with low impedance phones.

I think I am going to go for the Fuze.

What do you think of this one?

I can't find any reviews on it at all. Any Fuze owners have experience with this model? I kind of prefer the look of the last generation, but I can't find them anywhere ...

Thanks again for all the great feedback!

That's the latest generation of fuze players and to be honest I don't know how good it is or even if it sounds good. I am most familiar with the previous generation http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Video-Player-Black/dp/B001GCQ3KM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286647945&sr=8-1. That's the one I would recommend and you can also install an open source firmware (rockbox.org) to extend its functionality.

That's what I was thinking, DJGeorge--I like what I know of the previous generation better. Thanks for replying!

EDIT: Ordered! Should have it by tomorrow. I'll post my impressions later. Thanks again all.

don't listen to these guys

the answer is most certainly an ipod.  a touch if you can afford, a nano if you can't. if your wife isn't a geek or an audiophile, you certainly shouldn't shop as if she was.  also important, if her friends are not geeks and audiophiles, you shouldn't get her something that is only known to geeks and audiophiles.  you should get an ipod.

at work: "oh stacey, ummm, what kind of player is that....hmmm never heard of it"

at work: "oh stacey, nice ipod"  "yes, thank you, its a birthday gift from my husband"

btw an ipod touch is way more than an audioplayer.... here's the list of what i use mine for, in order of most use to lease use.... check email/facebook, download and play podcast, play games, listen to music, take notes, keep budget records,  you get the point.

Sony NWZ-S is a good one.

umm, I think you missed the point where blinkstar said "I dislike the level of control Apple maintains with its products but I would be willing to consider an Ipod if need be." He is the gift giver, let him establish the criteria for giving the gift out.

The Clip+ sounds better to my ears than the Fuze.

Do you guys read the topic at all before posting?

If you did you should have noted that the OP has already ordered a Fuze.

I have a Sansa e260 Rockbox'd. My wife like the payer so much I bought one for her $30.. I would have gave her mine but there was a crack in the back, and I know it's always good to have a back up. But I just bought me a Ipod Touch 8gb 3rd gen. I know she'll just take it from me and I'll have two e260's.
