Yuin PK1 - Cannot Solder Plug!

Hi everyone,

I'm having some serious issues re-terminating my Yuin PK1's. There is a coating on the cables (once the shielding is removed) its blue in color and meant to be the insulation between the signal cable and the shielding and it inhibits soldering and is impossible to remove.

If you have re-plugged Yuin PK1s before....how do I go about dealing with this issue? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Use a very hot soldering iron with a blob of solder and the insulation will burn off and you can tin the wires

cheers

I've tried that previously, it didn't work.

have you tried taking a lighter to the wire before you tin it?  sometimes that can burn off the enamel.

I second the lighter idea for removing the lacquer, but be careful not to melt the unstripped PVC, too.  Multiple brief passes work better than trying to burn it all in one shot.

Unlike your avatar, headphone cables aren't eeenveencible!

I'll give that a shot guys, thanks. Haha thanks Tangent

I use a aspirin tablet under the wire, when i touch it with a soldering iron (hot). I wouldn't breathe the fumes, although, they are prolly harmless. If i don't have an aspirin i use a panadol. The aspirin trick is pretty well known in the electronics community.

I second the lighter. Recabled a re252 for a friend and it worked like a charm!

i used a lighter too.  what plug are you going to use?

the lighter trick is nice, but if you burn too much at some point the copper will oxidize...the coating is here for a reason.

Flux eats copper oxide.

so what would advise to use after having done the lighter trick to "seal" the soldering? Liquid Electrical Tape?

How about clear nail polish? http://www.steadyhealth.com/about/why_does_jewelry_turn_my_skin_green.html

"oxidizing with copper [..] Nail polish will harden and form a solid barrier that prevents the oxidation"

i think nail polish will work but the the bad thing is once it dry, the cable will get too hard.

I've already done it on a phone 1/8" jack, it still looks very much sealed to me...and the cable is soldered and doesn't move anyway.

can you post a picture, what kind of 1/8" jack did you use?
