DAC for new (vintage) hi-fi setup

Thread Starter

So my father, in his version of a midlife crisis, has accumulated quite a bit of vintage hifi gear by pillaging the basements of friends.

So now he has a working Scott 222C (approximately 1962 vintage)

and a pair of Klipschorns (approximately 1987 vintage)

And he wants a DAC the run that particular setup. The stereo is computer driven with mostly FLAC files, but lacks an SPDIF out, though of course we could fix that.

He's looking for a standalone DAC in the sub $500 range (I know, not a lot, but he's acquired this setup on the cheap). He's eyeing the Beresford Caiman, but is open to suggestions. Anyone who knows older hifi have a suggestion for what would complement this setup?

Thanks much!

That's a nice setup - I especially love the old Scott gear. How about an older DAC? One I've always liked is the Musical Fidelity A3-24. They're running around $400-$500 on Audiogon. Some of the old Parasound DACs are popular, too.

Keep the vintage theme:  Audio Alchemy DDE v1.2,  Adacom GDA-700, Parasound-1000,  possibly Assemblage 2.7.  All great DAC that can be found under $500 from unsuspecting sellers.  If he is really truly going thru mid-life convince him to spend several grand on a Pass D1 (worth every penny.)
