Looking for advice on headphone upgrade

Hey everyone-

 

I have a pair of AKG K240 headphones.  I like the type that go over your ears. My amp is a NAD with 70 WPC.  I listen to rock, everything from Jimi to Pantera, Arch enemy and everything in between. So I listen to these a little loud and they sound stressed for lack of a better word.  Just like an amp needs headroom I feel that there is no headroom left in these headphones at my listening levels.  Anyhow my budget right now is $150.00. Any sugestions would be appreciated. Would going to a closed back inprove the sound/volume?

It sounds like you're describing the amp just running out of power.  Presumably your NAD should have a decent headphone amp built in.  Possibly the speaker out just run through some resistors.  It could conceivably be some horrible tacked on 10 cent opamp but I doubt it.

 

Do you know which model of 240 you have?  There are probably at least a dozen different versions.  If you have one of the older 600ohm models its possible that you amp is running out of voltage to drive your 'phones, which is possible since most loudspeakers aren't more than 8.
