[Help!] Rudistor RPX-33 & Senn HD650? Alternatives: GS-1, Headroom UDA, Meier Concerto, SPL...

Hello all,

I need an amp that synergize well with my Sennheiser HD650.

I will run it Single-Ended and I prefer Solid-State Amp

I found that my HD650 is dark, warm, veiled (IMO), laid-back. Changing into other cans is not an option because it's really comfortable (IMO) and I'm already in love with its bass & soundstage/separation, I guess I just need to pair it with a great amp to unleash its true potential.

I wish that my future amp would bring dynamic (speed), PRaT, lift the "Sennheiser's veil", more open sounds, 3-Dimension soundstage, resolution (more details), boost the treble slightly, yet very musical, lively and not cold/sterile.

I mainly listen to pop, rock, and RnB.

I couldn't find any recent thread/review over Rudistor RPX-33, it seems the last posts were mostly years ago, never been paired with HD650 in the past reviews.

Do you guys think RPX-33 is the right one?

For those of you that had used/currently use Rudistor RPX-33, especially if the amp is paired to HD650, your comments & impressions would be much appreciated.

I also pointed out some alternative amps at its price range & in my budget, if you think the above-mentioned amps would suit my taste & musical preference, feel free to post your comments & sound quality impressions.

Sorry if I asked too much

Thanks.

I used to own the RPX-33 and also for a short time the HD650. The first thing I would do is to use a aftermarket cable in the HD650. I personally would go with the Aphroditecu29.com Zeus OCC copper or even better OCC Silver. Send Robert an email. He will honestly recommend you which one basedon what you are looking for in the sound.

Now, regarding amps. The RPX-33 IMO is an excellent amp. Dual mono discrete construction, very powerful and very musical but it has a little bit of a realxed signature (I personally prefer it) but I think with the right cable and using silver or SPC interconnects will do a great job.

Another good option is a GS-1. The sound in this one is dryer and more analytical (I also used to own it) and then in between those two is the Violectric V200 (robert also sells them). This one could be ther right one for you since I think is roght in the middel between the Rudi and GS-1 reagrding sound.

FWIW, I run my HD600 off my Meier Concerto and the sound is incredible.  It really drives them well and balances out the sound.  People have said the HD600,650 sound better balanced and I think with the active balanced ground in the Concerto, I would have to agree with them

Yes it is true but not absolutely necessary especially with the RPX-33 and going balanced will restrict the amount of options in amps. Also, to make worthwhile to go with a balanced amp you should look into having the whole system balanced from the source to the headphones otherwise I would go with a quality SE amp. If you want to go balanced another good option is the Violectric V181.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Musicman59: I'm quite surprised when you said that RPX-33 is a relaxed amp. I thought it was dynamic (based on Markl's great review, from what I read this amp seems to be excellent, but of course I took it with grain of salt). Unfortunately no opportunity for me to audition the RPX-33 as I'm not living in USA nor Europe.

Do you think RPX-33 would open, revealing, and retrieve details in the music/recordings?

What about its bass and treble performance? Boost the treble and tighten the bass?

Because HD650 with wrong amplifiers might tend to have boomy and bloated bass that will diminish/reduce midrange and treble presence.

Gopack87: Can you please give more sound quality impressions of Concerto?

Yes Concerto is a great contender if I would move to balance system in the future. But I need to upgrade my DAC and cables into balanced as well, must be huge amount of cash.

The Concerto doesn't used a balanced connection, so you don't need a balanced dac, cables.  Balance ground is the technology used in the amp, but I'm no tech specialist  to explain it all, so you'll have to read about it on the meier site.  My favorite thing about the Concerto is the excellent volume control.  It's nice having such great volume control to find the ideal volume on my phones.  This amp really takes the HD600 to new heights and is about 85% of the Beyer T1's I recently sold.  I bought the Concerto because I wanted one amp for both high and low impedance headphones, and people have noted great synergy with phones like T1, HD800 and with the LCD-2.  I highly recommend you consider the Concerto.

What I meant with "Relaxed" is more musical instead of being analystical. It has a very sweet kind og "Tube" sound for a solid state amplifier. I personally prefer it to the GS-1 and V200 but I have no experience with Meier amps. I sold the RPX-33 just to buy the bigger brother RP010B MkII otherwise it would say with me forever.

I think the HD650 with a good silver cable and the RPX-33 would be an excellent system IMO. The reason the HD600/HD650 do better in balanced is becuase they are receiving double the power. In a single ended amp the positive carries singal and the negative is just ground or return. IN a balanced configuration the positive carries signal and the negative also carries the same signal but with inverted polarity so you actually are doubling the power sent to the driver with results in more control therefore better sound. The resoan I like the RPX-33 with the HD650 is becuse ti is powerful. If you see one of them open you basically will see two mono amplifiers from transformers all the way to just before the single ended receptacle so it has enoigh power o make the HD650 sing.

The Silver Zeus cable is expensive but I think the Zeus OCC copper will do it for you. I am using it in my T1 and HD800 and did not loose any high frequencies and got the bass tighter.

If you want silver then a comon one use for Sennheiser is the Silver Dragon

I too am considering a hd650/rpx33 combo so keep us posted if you end up going that route if its not too much to ask
