Are these headphones fake? Sony MDR-7506

If they are being sold by any company from HK or China, assume that they are fake and don't buy them.

The seller is chinese and he is selling the phones for half the price....yes totally legit. If you want to pretend to have the 7506 buy them, but if you want the real sound, then pay what they are worth. I almost fell for one of these fakes until I heard the real deal and the sound was not even close.

Just a follow up, I live in Mexico and here we are flooded with Sony fakes, so I have plenty of experience with them. You can imagine my surprise when I heard a real pair brought by a cousin of mine living in NY.

They even have them for 32.00 dollars...That's why I think ebay and headphones don't mix.  Too many fakes out there.

The $32 ones have a ~$20 shipping charge, so the total price is about the same.

I ordered a pair of these before I saw this thread (a $45 set, free shipping).  Is there any detail in terms of what to look for to spot a fake vs the real thing?

I kinda just figured, they are made in China anyway, and with the yuan-to-US-dollar exchange rate tilted their way, no reason for me to expect that they aren't the real thing.

unfortunately the fakes nowadays are so well copied , that there is very few things make you distinguish between the fakes and the real ones, except the driver, it looks cheap and sounds cheap. if you want to save some bucks, try getting the V6 from an authorized dealer, it is cheaper and basically the same phone, just with a different sticker and nickel jacks instead of gold ones.

 From what Ive read, one easy way to tell is if the cord on the phones is glossy, then they are fake. The cable cord should be a matte black.

I'll report back.  I have a good idea how they'll sound because I had 7505's, so if they sound too different too, that'll be a tipoff.

I have a keen eye, and I'm hoping *something* with the headphones themselves or the packaging itself might tell me one way or the other in terms of legitimacy too.

One stupid question I would have is: why wouldn't Sony go after people like this?  IOW, I buy fakes, I'm a dumb consumer who doesn't know any better :-), I don't like them, I post on Head Fi, Amazon, eBay reviews, that 7506's sound like crap, hurts Sony sales.  ??

Just like fake shoes, purse, movies, rugs, ties, shirts, etc.  too many of them to catch them all.  Just not a realistic thing.  That's why most headphones maker have recommended authorized retailer list, to protect there customer.  It goes with everything, if you want cheaper price on a purchase, their is always a risk. I'm not necessary saying you can't find a good one, just saying their is always that possibility.

I wouldn't buy from that seller, majority of his positive comments are from private sales.
