cellphone battery

guys,

i just got a new android phone and i keep getting mixed advice from ppl about how to keep the battery fresh

some say i should avoid charging the battery when it is like halfway because it's the number of times it is being charged that makes it weak over time

others say i should keep topping off the battery cuz it's bad for the battery to always be discharged and then charged all the time

what is the right answer?

thanks

the answer is it doesnt matter, itll be a li ion or li poly so no memory effect.

Eh my SGS does weird stuff every now and again. You can look into wiping the battery stats if your battery life goes down the drain.

Go buy the kit ebay with 2 batteries, a charger, screen protectors and a usb cable for $15. biggrin.gif

Not entirely accurate. While Li ion batteries don't have the memory effect the the older NiCad batteries had, many Li ion battery packs have battery monitor chips, which are basically fuel gauges for the battery. Frequent recharges can actually reset the threshold for low battery warning. My wife did this to a brand new phone, by charging it every day, but by discharging and recharging the battery a few times it recovered, and lasted the life of the phone.

There's a web site called Battery U that has tons of great information about all types of batteries. Best practices for Li Ion batteries is to not let them get too low too often. The battery can be damaged if the volts/cell gets too low. Recharging at 25% or so will help prolong the life of the battery.

How to prolong lithium-based batteries

I think it differs device to device, my Sony Vaio for example reccmoends only charging to 80% capacity to prolong battery life. But in general I haven't ever had a problem with cell phone batteries, charge it up, let it drain, charge it up again, with the good battery life of todays cell phones I think you'll be into a new phone before you really start noticing negative effects but then again YMMV.

thanks for the replies guys

i guess i'll just have to charge it a lot then to keep it from draining too much

the one thing i miss about my old non-smart phone is it could go for like a week before i have to charge it again

in any modern phone the charge controller will protect it from being over-discharged.

just charge it when it gets low.
