Next Project suggestions

I just am finishing up a y2 with a y1full+++,  and last month it was a Millet hybrid mini max.  I have the DIY bug but do not have a direction.  Any suggestions for the next project would be welcome.  I do not have enough posts for a signature line but my equipment is as follows:

Ipod through 1/4 jack, Millet hybrid mini max, AKG 701

Carver CD through spdf to y2, Hafler 945, Hafler 9300, Magnipans (modded xover).

I like the tube sound, I did NOT have a lot of fun with the fine pitch surface mount soldering.  The larger pitch surface mount stuff was just fine.  No price range but perceived value is important ie $500 in parts for a $5000 piece of equipment is a good thing.

Thanks in advance!

A dynalo makes a good contrast with the MiniMax. The difference is surprising.

If you build one, build a S22 psu with it, because it really does the dynalo justice

and also is a "must have" piece of equipment usable in lots of amp projects.

If you really wanted to go crazy with a Dynalo project, buy a second board and populate

only the output stage and use the "balanced bridged" configuration outlined in

the original project file at headwize archive. A balanced bridged Dynalo driven by

a y2 is the most bang-for-the-buck source+driver setup in high end headphones IMO.

Another fun project that unfortunately wasn't that popular and recently discontinued

was the Jung psu offered by Tangent.  I have one with 4 wire remote sense, powering

my y2 as an "extreme overkill" psu. You might be able to locate a board with a "WTB"

in the marketplace.

I like bada bing's recommendation, too. A bridged/balanced Dynalo is also known as a Dynamid, and was produced commercially as the Gilmore Reference. Great amp and no SMD.

Now, if you like tubes, you might want to look at one of the tube DIY projects that doubles as a preamp. You could replace your stereo preamp with it and get some nice tube sound from your Maggies, too.

It is not exactly the same thing to me !

Dynalo is easy to build using the boards from AMB. Maybe too easy, try it on a perfoboard.

I was looking at the Dyna thread with half an eye toward the Dynamite.  As I understand it the Dynalo would replace the Millet minimax.  With only a month under its belt I am hesitant to build something that competes with it.  Hum,  I am having some problems with a noise floor on the y2 which a PSU may clear up.  I will search the boards using JUNG PSU and learn a little more.  I did look at the AMB s11 also which may be the ticket.  Ah decisions, decisions.

Hey Uncle Eric, what search terms would you use to find the best example of the tube preamp?

I didn't want to start new thread. I have mosfet headamp in class A based on richard murdey (partly szekeres too) and thinking about new project. I want to try another mosfet (can be more complicated) but not hybrid (maybe later). I've been searching on the internet but no luck so far. Do you have any suggestions?

And questions about hybrids. How long last tubes in hybrid? I have some experience with guitar tube preamp but that's different because even if tubes change sound it doesn't matter too much. Do you have any bad experience with weird sounding tubes? I wanted to build full tube headamp, then changed that to hybrid and finaly ended up with mosfet. I was affraid of hiss because my previous guitar amp experience and some posts on forums.

Thanks.

I did have some ringing with a set of tubes but I switched them out and have not had a problem after that (tube rolling is fun!)  I understand from the boards the AKG 701s I am using are difficult to drive properly.  I have NO complaints but am open to the DynaLo as a contrasting rig.  I am following up by researching the DynaLo v. Millet Mosfet Max.  There is also rumor about a new tube amp called the Torpedo  that sounds interesting.
