Ipod Classic 160g, Fall 2010

Yesterday, the Ipod classic that i bought in October of 2009 was replaced at an Apple Store free of charge, since I had 20 days left on a free one-year warranty. This Ipod sounds completely different than the one I bought last year. For starters, it has a considerably higher max volume; I don't even need to change the max volume factory preset, but when I do, it can even blast my AKG 240 headphone; the Fall of 2009 could barely run them at a sufficient volume. Secondly, using the shure 530s, the bass is much deeper, and the highs much more sparkly.I guess it might take a while to get use to this new sound signature, but the mids don't seem as clear, and there seems to be some grain in the low-mids, but I suspect if the bass is stronger and the highs are brighter, the mids aren't going to be as upfront- maybe I just need time to get use to the new sound signature. Ultimately, it's hard for me to say which ipod I prefer, but I can say with certainty that they are very different.

Well i thought the Classic remained unchanged this season. So your finding is quite suprising

this may be a silly question but please indulge me - are you sure the eq settings are identical? it might account for the differences.

Yes the eq setting are identical: the are off. The Eqs on ipods are crappy.

My new 160 GB IPod arrived today. It's thinner than the 160 GB IPod I bought two years ago. I have to wait until tomorrow to listen to it and see how different it is. Because of this place I bought the new one.You guys......

Update:

I just spent three hours listening to a variety of music on this newest IPod 160GB, and I believe it sounds dramatically cleaner than the 2007 version. None of the clipped bass sound at all. The highs seem cleaner and more pronounced, and the bass is much tighter and perhaps a bit more noticeable. I thought the 2007 version was all midrange, tubby-clipped bass, and muddled highs. I really enjoyed what I heard today on the new one. I was listening with Shure 530 headphones. MMMMMM.

A few days ago I ordered a Piio E7, can't wait to see what the combination brings....

Don't do it - Apple will then control your brain and slowly make you into one of their zombie clones....

Well considering I own, and have owned, iPods for years now I think Steve Jobs has failed miserably. I buy what catches my fancy, and this is a better option than the misguided Cowon X7 I was waiting for.

Oh well, iPod classic is for ME!!!
