Can you damage a stereo DAC by feeding it a dolby digital signal?

Just got a new blurayplayer I want to use as transport. hooking it up to my stereo DAC I am worried I may forget to pull the cable or switch it off when running surround audio. I would assume no harm would be done feeding it a signal it can“t handle?

The max input voltage is usually much higher than the max output voltage of a device. So there should not be a problem.

Dolby Digital is basically an encoded stream sent over SPDIF so you won't cause any damage to the DAC, bu you might experience a burst of noise if an amp hooked up to the DAC is on and connected.

If your DAC can't pass through an encoded signal or you try to decode it with an incompatible DAC will result in some nasty high pitched noise coming out of your headphones so I wouldn't recommend it.
