My Ipod Nano 6g Review - Page 2

From some other forum.. Hold down the Vol - button, the Sleep/Wake and Vol+ buttons in that order until the nano reboots. Then you get the service menu. Go into Standby to switch the player off.

Quadruple post... the nano automatically goes into shutdown after 36 hours, I think.. it's like a Sony in this regard.

I returned mine the next day. Sound quality is absolute garbage. We're talkin fatigue after a minute of listening.... just awful. Shame really, as it's perfect for the gym otherwise.

You must have had a bad unit... I would say mine doesn't sound quite as good as my U5 or Clip+, but the differences are very small and I have to be sitting quietly somewhere to notice.

Walking around the busy streets of Edinburgh I notice no difference between any of my players let alone jogging or at the gym.

I tend to agree.  According to his signature, he has some of the same players that I do and I didn't find the new Nano inferior to either the older Ipod Classic or the first gen Nano.  I'm certainly not saying its' sound quality is great, but it is certainly not bad.

Well to be fair, I'm not a fan of how the other iPods I have sound either. They definitely sound better with higher end 'phones, such as the Nano with my UM3X, the combination is actually pretty great, so I imagine the 6th gen Nano would have sounded pretty decent as well.. but the problem is I bought it specifically for the gym, and I use the ADDIEMs for that. Those sound fine with my iPhone 4, but sounded absolutely terrible with the Nano (and the 1st gen as well).

I suppose I could try to find another set of earphones with a built in remote that I could use with the gym that would sound better with the new Nano, but I don't really have the money or patience to play around with a bunch of earphones til I find something I like.

I just acquired a new 16 GB Nano. It sounds just fine and the touch controls work well. I'm pretty dubious about the value / money for the average user but it happens to score a bullseye on what I need- a straightforward dedicated music player, which can hold 256K rips of a sizable chunk of my extensive CD library, while fitting easily into my earphone pouch so the whole shebang can be slipped into any pocket.

Ah, that could be an issue, I don't know.  I honestly haven't used the Nano with any of my cheaper buds yet.  I do use the IE8 for gym use and the player sounds good with them.  While I can certainly see why someone wouldn't want to use their best IEMs at the gym, I figure I bought them to be portable so I'm going to use them that way every chance I get.

I agree with your concerns about the price.  For me the price was worth it because it hit a "bullseye" for what I use the player for, but I couldn't really recommend it to others, who don't follow my rather limited needs from a player, simply because of the price.

I only ever listen with my IE8s also... I like how I can listen to music but still hear traffic.

SQ-wise the nano may not be quite as good as some other players, but the difference is minimal to me and the UI is so much nicer than said other devices. It wasn't quite worth the money I paid but I really wanted one.

You can't shut it down? Is that for sure? I have a Nano 2G and I never shut it down either, but if you pause the music it puts itself into sleep mode and battery is conserved, I never bother "shutting it down" with the hard press. The only time it ever shuts down is when it hangs and I am forced to reboot. So does the new Nano still use battery even in pause mode?

I had a Clip+, honestly didn;'t like it much. SQ was *slightly* better than my Nano 2G but the real boon here was the 5-band equalizer. Everything else... I preferred my Nano. Interface was lousy, Rockbox made it even worse, it looked and felt like a cheap plastic toy, and worse the clip on it was horrible. In fact, I *lost* my Clip after 2 months of use because it just fell off my clothes and I didn't even realize. And the real clincher: the battery life was a joke.

Is the Nano 6G's clip better? I need an ultra portable and this is what caught my eye. I have no interest in revisiting Sansa and their piss poor battery life players and lousy screens. This Nano seems to be the best option so far. A little pricey, but nothing I can't handle.

What I want to know is how good the SQ is. Apparently I gather this Nano has better SQ than the previous Nano models. The 2G is quite bassy but a bit muddy and lacks clarity. I compared it to a 4G and the 4G had much better SQ, much cleaner and far more detail. Bass was tighter but unfortunately less (I am a bass head).  From what I am gathering the 6G has the cleanest sound of all Nanos? Fast attack, good imaging, but lean bass, Is this true?
