I am looking to start building my own electrostatic speakers...

Any input form the community... This is my first DIY project...

I was thinking on modeling it around this headphone design but just scaled up...

Does that sound doable???

Check DIY audio.com

There is a planar and electrostat speaker building section.

How much does the thickness of the mylar sheet matter?

Your first DIY project?  Might want to work your way up before you try messing with something that can end up killing you.  There are also books available on making ESLs.

Touch both stators at the same time. A slipup during a test of the power supply will do it, too.

The power needed for speakers is a bit higher than what you need for headphones. Be sure you know your way around high voltage, first.

There are a number of resources available. One book I have is "The Electrostatic Loudspeaker Design Cookbook," by Roger Sanders. He takes you through it step-by-step.

However, you might want to keep an eye out for a pair of dead Quads. Restoring a pair can be cheaper than entirely DIY and you'll have access to a lot of restoration materials and tips.

ohh that way. I actually have an engineer working with me so I doubt I am going to electrocute myself...

I just wanted to find out what material is the best to work with...

Thanks for the tip on the book though.

Any opinion on the thickness of the mylar though?

What is up with dual threads - against the Terms Of Service!

Anyways, it looks like a nice adventure. Will be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Need to find the ideal metal sheet for them any ideas??

You should probably delete this thread and continue in the DIY forum (since the topic of this thread is DIY-related)

Though it's Quad-specific, have a look around www.quadesl.org. You'll find a lot of information about various sheets and coatings.
