Just received it. It sounds just right in accordance to its price and size. Low frequencies starting at 80-100Hz are there but get distorted with the rest of the music. So far it is good for vocals and not too congested music. For menial purposes and substitute my laptop's internal speaker these are just right.

It has become more distortion free in the las two hours. It sounds decent with old music. Modern not so much. The less components the music has the better.
I briefly tried it with the headphone out on a Burson HA 160 and the sound cleans up considerably.

I threw mine away after the usb connector broke off inside the speaker.
The Fiio S9 is a big improvement but it's rather bulky. It's VERY cheap though and definitely worth the dough. The JBL On Tour is my current favorite portable speaker. It's pretty small, runs on batteries, is cheap and sounds good enough for a small impromptu party. Even speakers like the Altec Lansing Orbit are better than the X-Mini's.
You shouldn't expect too much sound quality from a really small portable speaker though. How big/how expensive are you willing to go? Some of the portable speaker solutions cost up to $300.

In my opinion they are both pretty bad. I have owned them both (I'm very sensitive to gadgets
) but ended up never using them. They sound too crappy (thin, cheap, no bass, distort easily) and break easily. You'll be better off with something like a JBL On Tour or Fiio S9. I now have the On Tour and actually use it!
It runs on batteries and the sound quality is decent for something that size. MUCH better than the X-Mini's.
I was about to order the X-Mini MAX II and was looking around for reviews. I find it interesting that you like the JBL's much more when both use about the same size driver with about the same power...actually I think the JBL is 1" and the X-Mni is about 1.5". Interesting that you think the JBL sounds better...I guess they did a better job with the small drivers? Now I need to look at that item myself as I want something portable I can carry in my bookbag with my laptop. Or something I can keep in the glovebox if I am out and about and want better sound from my smartphone.

Last review that I read of a portable speaker was of the Razer Ferox. Most reviews said that they have anemic bass but great clarity, and they are omnidirectional.
