In a weird mood then, sorry. I would seriously suggest an older modded iPod running rockbox if you want a lot of storage and need FLAC. If you want to keep using the Arrow anyways, it's a great match size-wize. A cheaper way to go is the Sflo2 if you don't need the storage space and can bear the UI but even an old iPod Mini can be rockboxed.

As far as I know, none of the players ('cept the Hifiman) have a proper line out that skips the built-in amp completely, except for the iPods if you go through the dock using something like PocketDock.

Of course, I'm still quite new to all this, so do I actually have a point or am I just spouting insanities?

This sort of concerns me as well, since I've been thinking about purchasing an Arrow 12HE and I was thinking, what kind of player would suit it best.

I didn't think that using the dock of ipods would bypass the internal amp completly? will it?

There seems to be two types of line outs, attenuated by the volume control and non-attenuated. My iPod LOD is non-attenuated, while my Nokia has a "line out" but to me it is the same as the HP out since it is attenuated and uses the same jack, software selectable. I would say that the non-attenuated versions are the true line out, otherwise you are talking about a digital out to a DAC instead of an amp. At least that's the way I understand it.

I decided not to upgrade my portable source and just stick with the Sansa Clip+, high volume on 85% hooked to my Headstage Arrow with a silver dragon interconnect. I have bought a new DAC (Audio-GD NFB-11) instead as a first step towards a good desktop setup. Next purchase will be a decent CDP transport and possibly a set of bookshelfspeakers.

Thanks everyone for their comments and suggestions! Much appreciated.

Smart decision.
