Best Website/Store for quality OEM speakers?

Hi,

I was originally set on building a headphone amp but after analyzing the situation, I determined it would not be exactly suitable as my Sennheiser CX300s have small drivers and don't need too much power.

So, I've switched over to a basic LM386 amp as I just want to familiarize myself with amps before I get into anything too big.

Regardless, does anyone have a website they have found to be the best for ordering some quality OEM speakers. Maybe I just don't have the right search terms. I want something a little bit better than the subpar hobbyist speakers they sell around but not as expensive as buying a full fledged Klipsch or something.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not too familiar with these brands. Any that you recommend the most? Something with a good cost/performance ratio?

Thanks.

I just need a basic speaker but I don't feel comfortable buying those ones from websites like china-import.com (fake).

Would something like this do? Or is it crap?

How are you at cabinetry? Audio physics?

Here is a nice little kit.

I'm not sure what your budget or skill level are though.

The kits will give you everything you need except for the wood.

I have no idea what any of these sound like.

Are these speakers for headphones or like bookshelf or floor standing speakers? If the latter, I built a nice pair of floor standing speakers using a kit (although individual parts are also sold) I bought from HERE. < Stores called Electro Mavin.

I can make anything out of wood.  I am trying to make a amp + speaker that can be powered on 9V. I can go with a smaller speaker as well. Something small with a bit of punch.

My favorite places to order speakers are Madisound (http://www.madisound.com) and Speaker City USA (http://www.speakercity.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?).

I don't know what you can drive with a 9V.  A 9V struggles to power headphones - speakers are an order of magnitude less efficient than headphones.  Maybe you could drive some Lowthers with a 9V, but they really deserve some nice tubes.

When you mention Lowthers, this is what I think of...

Well that's not available in my country but there are plenty of good things on there for reference!

Thanks for all the help guys. Solen seems to be my favorite right now.

TheLaw, You can't go wrong with Uncle Eriks choice! I'll add The "Parts Express" because it's close for me....They also have many choices of drivers, cabinets, and everything else you might need to throw together a pair of speakers....

BUT, I'm with Uncle Erik on the 9V thing!  In all my yrs. of building speakers I've never heard of that low of power.......Maybe a 2 or 3inch full range driver in a REAL small cabinet will produce a very low volume speaker.....but I doubt that will even work...... Tubes man! just a small single ended design....or you could get one of those "T-AMPS"  (cheap $$$ wise) that would work...Good luck......

Those seem nice too. And Uncle Erik on PartsExpress. They are all good. Lets put it like that.

the reason I am wondering about the 9V thing is because I'm sure you've seen those cheap $5-10 portable speakers for iPod. They run off like 4xAAs which means they can have a maximum of 6V and probably runs more at around 5V. By the time it is regulated it is probably <5V which confuses me.

These things are pretty darn loud for being so small and running off such low voltages and very little actual battery capacitance. How the heck do they do this? Maybe I'll go the the $5 store and buy one and tear it apart.
