Oppo DV-980H questions

I'm finally going to build a small desktop setup using some of my gear.  I have an Oppo DV-980H player that will work as a source component for CD/DVD/SACD.  It would be nice to give this unit a second lease on life since it has been replaced by a Blu-ray player.  The plan is as follows:

Oppo DV-980H (for CD/DVD/SACD) > RCA switch > Woo WA3 > HD600

Here's my question... Would it be best for me to have the Oppo player process the sound and send the signal to the amp via RCA or run a digital signal to a DAC and then to the WA3?  Bear in mind we are talking stereo use and not 5.1 so it's just a sound processing question.

Any thoughts?

Well, seeing as the Oppo was a sub $200 unit, I suspect the internal DAC is not world class.

However, my DV-980H did fare well in a comparison with a Music Hall Maverick SACD player on redbook playback, which was a $1000 player. And that was through a Little Dot III feeding HD650s. Your post-DAC system looks fairly comparable.

So I don't know that I would spend a lot on a DAC to upgrade the Oppo unless you were planning on moving on to the really high end amps/cans.

Oppo gear is pretty decent. The likes of Ayre and Lexicon buy it retail, put it into a different box and charge you 10x the original price.

If you are the kind of guy who hears 'night and day' differences between competing brands of digital cable then you might want to spend more money. Otherwise it's probably not worth it.

An audio interface will be an investment though. You can use it to replace the pre amp control functionality which used to be found on old school integrated amplifiers.

You've got my curiosity up though, I'm going to take my Firestone FUBAR IV plus home and plug the Oppo in.....see if I can tell a difference. The FUBAR uses a Cirrus Logic DAC chip, which I hear is a step below the current Wolfson DACs.

Thanks everyone.  I too like the sound quality of my Oppo player.  I think I will skip the DAC and maybe spring for a WA6 instead of a WA3.

Sparky14, let me know the outcome of your test.

So I've decided on the following setup:

Sources:

Oppo DV-980H (Own) -and- PC to M-Audio Fasttrack Pro DAC (Own)

Switch/EQ:

Technical Pro EQB5101 (To be purchased)

Amp:

Woo WA3 (To be purchased)

Headphones:

HD 600 (Own)
