Replacing the cable on an AKG k601 - Page 2

Despite all this, I still cannot get piece 12 to stay latched onto pieces 10 and 8.  It just keeps falling off towards my ear with a small amount of shaking.  Any thoughts?

(I may just go with "if it's not broken don't fix it" at this point...).  It's a minor hassle that it wobbles around there.  Piece 10 can basically just come right out of the entire assembly.

It is interesting, though, to figure out exactly how piece 10 is supposed to act as "glue" between piece 8 and 12, at least it seems that way.  Not sure how that all works... blink.gif

Hey cello, great to hear that your cans work. You got it all figured out. Are you ready to offer K601 repair services?  LOL.

Oops, delayed posting the last one and you came up with new problems. Is there no bayonet-type lock on #12? The exploded view on the service manual does not show the underside.

You are enhancing my reluctance ever to want to take these things apart. Popping the lid is as far as I want to go.

After reading the driver travails above, I did not want to go near those posts. I decided to leave the ends of the existing wires in place and fix the old cable.

I managed to figure out how to solder the wires without removing them from the posts. I just slipped some small-diameter heatshrink over each wire, soldered and heatshrank them so they'd hold and conduct. Then, having slipped a couple sections of 1/4" heatshrink over the cable, placed them one by one over the cable to form a snug sleeve where it enters the housing and shrank them into place.

Popped the lid, part 23, back on and the headphone is in business again. Sounds fine to me, even compared to my new K702. Similar but not identical. Comparison study to be published later.

Going in the reverse direction, putting the unit back together, the hardest part was pressing the lid over the headband wires. The extensions that fit over the wires didn't particularly want to go back into place, but careful pressure eventually snapped them over. Thus if I have to take it apart again, I'll start opposite the wires.
